87 octane of
GOOD quality brand and NO methonol added(Mobil, Chevron, Exxon, ect). The oil is probably OK, but I wouldn't use it in an engine under warranty.

KMart sells the Pennzoil TCW3 for about 5 cents more than Walmart around here. That's 5 cents on a gallon.

Howdy, TOB.

SuperTech is blended and bottled by Pennzoil. It is excellent oil.

I agree with FBM on the fuel.

Good luck. :)

JB is correct. The Walmart brand is blended and packaged by the Pennzoil-Quakerstate Company (now owned by Shell Lubricants USA as of Oct. of 2002).
It is an excellent oil.

the cheep suff is good. Manufactureres of tcw3 oil all have to meet tcw3 guidlines to legally use the name.

It is just that the more expensive stuff may exceed thoes guide lines, and it will say if it does on the oil container. And thats the only diference i have seen.

I was just at Sam's Club, got Merc Quicksilver Prem TCW3 by the gallon for $11.00. I got 3, though this was a good price.

Bass and Walleye Boats magazine did an oil test 2 years ago and found that the Walmart oil had the same formula as the Exxon Superflo, which was differnt than the Pennzoil.

Chances are Wallmart buys from the lowest bidder, no matter what make.

Hmmm. An analysis is not the same as a test.

Did the Magazine actually find any differences in performance of the oils?

I always ran the Quiksilver in my Merc, the one day I couldn't find any and put a gallon of superflo in my tank was the day the powerhead blew....coincidence??/ I will never know.
I now have a Yamaha 225, I run nothing but Yamalube.
I look at it this way, I spent 15,000 for the motor.
I can buy Pennzoil for 10-11 dollars a gallon and Yamalube for 18 a gallon. I use 12 gallons a year, so for the 85 dollars more it costs, the piece of mind is worth it to me.
When ya powerhead blows, it is a very EXPENSIVE sound~~!! It makes a LOUD bang, then it gets vewy vewy kwiet~!~!!
I have done A LOT of reading on here about TCW 3 oils, you can read both sides of the debate, but I never really got a straight answer.
I use ring free and Yamalube and hope it pays off in the end.
I know one guy who owns a marina here, sells ONLY pennzoil and that's what he runs in his Twin 225 Johnson's.
We all know Yamaha, Mercury, Johnson and all others don't refine any oils, but are they all the same?????
I would say, at least put Pennzoil in there, but I would stay away from 6 dollar a gallon superflo.

JB,

The article said it was not about whose oil worked best , but to find out if there were really differences in various oils. A common misconception was that oil company X made outboard company Z's oil. The story showed that no two oils were alike except Exxon and Walmart, according to the lab tests. It was interesting reading and told how outboard oil was mixed.
