Do you think a metal fabricator could match the diameter of the original piece and even include a grove like the original?

Aluminum is pretty soft, I would ask around, a place that fixes lower units might be able to do it. And then it's done right the first time.

If you're able to do it with JB Weld, they'll be able to do it with aluminum.

Any welder worth his/her salt can do that with their eyes closed. I wouldn't hesitate to track down a TIG welder to have them address it.

They'll build it up with a bead or three then grind it back down to match the existing.

I had a welder take a look, and he thought it would be tough to weld even after cutting off the most corroded part. He said that, even if he could do it, it might take 4 -5 hrs at $120/hr = $600. I have spent $250 on parts, gimbal bearing, bellows, sealer etc. I will be paying $150 to remove the bearing, and possibly $200 for new U-Joints. + labor. I Know ... B O A T = Bring On Another Thousand!! I even talked to a very experienced boat shop owner who suggested using "Marine-Tex"
