Re: Is this a deck or hull issue ?

Camera is gone for the weekend (with my daughter) But here is a similar picture from another persons build = i edited to show where iam talking about . My boat has 3 stringer , none connect to the transom . The center stringer stops approx 15 inch before the back of transom , the side 2 stop approx 1.5 inch from the transom . The bilge box/ area i removed was glassed to the transom but the wood never butted against the transom . So i'll build a 3 sided box like in this picture . The red area i marked , where the wood box would sit on the hull is where i don't know if i set it in a PB mix or a PL bedding then glass it in or just resin the bottom of the wood and set in in and glass it . I have read about hard spot or something when a stringer without sitting in a bedding or on foam could create a hard spot .... didn't know if the small box would do the same ..

The black lines i added are where my stringer are located . Most builds i look at are 2 stringers down the middle and the box is built between them , or on 3 stringers most seem to have at least middle stringer / keel part touching the bilge box which touches the transom or the 2 stringers on side run to the transom tying them together . So fiqured i want to at least do what needs to be done correctly .

Ok, I gotcha. Here's what I recommend. In the drawing, notice that I would attach and tab the stingers to the transom and the front of the bilge. I would then make 45? deflector pieces to direct any water to the outer sides of the bilge. I would then create two drains(blue rectangles) on each side of the bilge by drilling 1" holes and Gluing 1" pieces of PVC in them. You can plug them with regular drain plugs. Hopefully you get what I am saying.

Ok i do see how that works and would be more solid. So i need to do a scarf joint to connect old stringer(s) to the added on piece(s) ?

Bed the bilge enclosure box as you would the stringers, for similar reasons...... It could have a hard edge against the hull, if the hull flexes, and a narrow plywood edge is in contact with it, the hull might spider crack along that hard edge. Bedding the plywood edge, filleting w/ PB, tabbing and fiberglass & resin all spread the load so that there isn't as much pressure on a hard edge.

If you try & pull plastic sheeting down over the end of a #2 pencil (unsharpened) you probably can get the pencil to push thru the plastic, even if the eraser end is up, w/out much effort. Try the same thing over an upside down soda can (or carbonated adult libation of your choosing:)). Eventually you might get the plastic to fail along the edge of the can, but it will be much more difficult... More surface area to spread the force.............

You can use butt joints and sister them in. 3/8" ply is good enuf for the sisters. Glue and screw then resin and glass. Leave the screws in. Deck Screws are fine.
