I don't know anything about I/O motors but aren't they cooled by a similar means as an outboard engine?

If that is the case then a boat I saw today can expect some problems.

The pulled up a the ramp, stopped and began prepping the boat (didn't bother to do it in the prep area) they started the engine with the boat fully out of the water and kept it running for a couple of minutes before backing the thing into the water.

Wouldn't that overheat the boat and ruin the impeller?

Is this bad?

Yes! in more ways than one.

1.) The engine itself would probably not overheat in that length of time but the dry exhaust heat would make quick work of the rubber exhaust plumbing inside the boat.
2.) Impellers cannot last that long dry. That boat will very soon have overheating problems in the water.
3.) If their drive was all the way up that is very hard on ujoints.

It was all the way up and when they finally launched the boat the drive was still all the way up with the prop pretty much out of the water (engine still running but not in gear)

They took forever on the ramp getting ready to launch too.

I also saw another boat come in behind them being towed by an SUV with two small children in the bow and the driver's (presumably) wife in the boat.

I am pretty sure that is illegal and I'm certain that it is unsafe.

Re: is this bad

bad is rather a gentle euphamism, don't you think?

it is funny though...gotta admit that. like the idiot on "you tube" who runs his for about 19 seconds at 90% throttle with no water, and then laughs when he shuts it off...have another beer stupid, it won't be that funny in a minute.

Safe bet, after spending a few thousand on parts, pieces, and a new engine.....he will do it again!!

Sad but more than likely, true

What is really bad is that the marina won't tell him that there is something wrong with his procedure. They will just just keep sucking his wallet until some else explains to him that he's screwing up.

I imagine in the last year, they worked it out.

The video was only like 15-30 seconds at idle. Luckily there was likely no damage to the impeller. Definitely not a smart thing to do though...
