On my evinrude 140 V4 the model number starts with j140t and I believe the serial number is 804193. I know it is between 82&84 but I am trying to ascertain the exact model number. There is another number stamped on the casing "registered a/d number NEO 374". Is this relevant? I want to be able to order the corrects parts catalogue. Thanks.

The j140t is the beginning of the model number. What is the rest of it?

The problem is that it is illegible. It has not been deliberately erased, more like someone has slipped with a screwdriver or chisel.

Take a rubbing with paper and pencil. Sometimes that does the trick.

In all probability the next two or three letters after the "T" in the model number of (j140t) would indicate the year. Make a strong effort to see what they might be.

It's obviously a 140hp Johnson. Does that 140 have two metal carburetors or does it have four plastic carburetors?

That narrows the year down to between 1977 to 1984.

Is there a water telltale outlet at the starboard rear portion of the hood pan?

Does the PTT electric motor have just two wires leading to it, or three wires?

I can tell that the engine is between 82-84 because the guy I got it from has written this one on the wiring diagram in the manual. He is an electrician and I am confident he is right. It doesn't have a power tilt & trim. Is there any way it can be traced through the serial number or is that unlikely.

The model number may also be stamped on a shilling-sized plug on top of the motor block...

Do me a favour mate, I am only 35, lol. How big is a shilling? I got these numbers off of a round silver plate just below the cylinder head. You said in your thread "also", does this mean there is somewhere else on the engine I have missed???

The 1982 and 1983 140hp model incorporates a regular fuel pump.

The 1984 model uses a VRO pump. Which do you have?

By vro I believe you mean a pump that mixes the oil and fuel for you. Correct me if i'm wrong. Mine is definitely a premix (50:1) and I am sure the previous owner hasn't converted it as I am friends with him and he would have told me.

Yes, a VRO is a large black plastic unit and would have five (5) hoses attached to it. If you have the small fuel pump, that narrows the year down to 1982/83 if you're correct about the year being in that range.

O.K, so where can I look to see what model numbers were made in 1982/83 and is there anyway that I could crosscheck the serial number? And while we are on this issue, can you tell me how to tell if this engine is a crossflow or a looper???

Re: Is this my Model or serial number????

thanks mate, that bombardier site has helped me narrow it down to 4 model numbers. In addition I have found another site which shows me how to translate the evinrude engine numbers into dates/specifications. This will allow identification by a process of elimination. I can eliminate two of the model numbers (j140txcnb (1982)&j140txcte (1983) because the x means the shaft length is 25 inches whereas mine is a 20" which should be shown by a "L" Therefore mine is either a J140tLCNB (82) or J140tLCTE (83)

Re: Is this my Model or serial number????

Cool, I think i've got it now lads!!! It cant be the one ending in B because that indicates that the motor is a rope start. An electric start like mine would end in an E. Therefore I have reached the conclusion that the model number is J140tLCTE, a 1983 model. Thankyou for all your help guys and if any of you are interested in the website I was just looking at it has a really simple chart I believe you could use. The address is HTTP:brokeboats.com/omcid.html.

Re: Is this my Model or serial number????

Ezeke, do you think I have the right model number or do you think I have to look again? I have definitely narrowed the year down to 82-84 and when I looked on the bombardier web site it listed the models available in that year. But your message leads me to believe you don't necessarily agree. I have looked at the link you've given me, and there is definitely more information on it than the chart I was looking at, but I only found the four model numbers between the specified years. Is there somewhere where I could find a full list of the model numbers between 82-84 that maybe has more than four options. I really don't want to order the wrong parts catalogue, lol!!!
Cheers
