So as i explained in an earlier post, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=394237

i opened a can of worms when attempting what i thought would be a minor tune up. i noticed air escaping from the crank case seam. figuring this seal leaking was the issue i finally tore into the motor today. the original motor paint was over some of the squeezed out seal glue so this seems to be the original seal from 1976.

the reed valve assembly looks great, everything else seemed to be pretty clean and looked good. there was some carbon buildup on the top piston rod.

i was surprised to see almost zero sign of the glue seal on the 2 halves of the crankcase. not sure if thats normal or not. either way it needed to be resealed.

ive going to order some new gaskets for the intake, i already have a new bag of points/condensers, going to get some spark plugs. hoping that all gets it happy again, i miss my lil fishing boat!

3M Scotchgrip #847 Part number 776964 from an Evinrude dealer, or 7509A65 from www.mcmaster.com Good luck trying to find it at the corner hardware store.

you may find that BRP gel seal or the loctite anerobic gel seal equivalent will work even better and hold longer than the original stuff.
local auto parts store will carry the loctite stuff.
I dont use the locqic primer, tends to kick off the gel quicker than I can move.
clean all surfaces with acetone or other solvent that will evaporate and leave an oil free surface.

How much damage was done to the block half by not removing the line up pin correctly?

dont think any damage was done. it didnt put up a big fight.

this is the farthest ive gotten into outboard work, i did not know anything about removing the pins.

edit:went out to double check, pins look fine, dont see how they would have been damaged.

should the pins be removed prior to pulling the case/reinstall the pins after case is in place?
