it's funny. we're all concerned over a test score and we have no idea how it's computed. it could be a simple random number generator, and we'd still be trying to figure out how to "score" better.

Xcusme, Or Anybody who Knows.......

A simple cross-over Cat5 network cable between the 2 computers will allow you to transfer files back and forth with ease.....with WinXp it's easy.
I found the transfer wizard...
If I Unhook my cable modem, Do I plug the modem end of the cable into my old 'puter to transfer my old addressbook,+ settings to the new 'puter ????
I don't have a spare cable,+ there's only 1 10/100 port on each 'puter....
Will this Work ???????
Thanks...

tylerin - only if you are using Windows 2000 or XP. If you are using Windows ME or below any additional memory will do nothing for you and in fact may slow down your system. The older versions of windows can't manage the additional memory in an efficient manner (you can go search PCmag/ ZDlabs test results from a few years back and read the research)

SBN - congrats on the new machine. I always keep one older machine on my home network as a backup and I synch my data to it maybe once a day. Maybe a good use for your IBM.

Bondo - you need a crossover cable, or parallel port "laplink" cable, not your standard Cat 5 patch cable.

Read this if you want to make your own or you can buy one at a store near you that carries computer gear:

http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm

You can also just hook the old computer back up and email the files to yourself.

Bondo PS - if you decide you want to keep that old machine around and use it to back up your data or use it as a play machine, now would be the time to create a simple home network. All you have to do is pickup a broadband rounter and you will be able to share your cable connection and allow the 2 computers to communicate (share files, etc.)

Computer geeks had two wired types available right now for under $40

http://www.compgeeks.com/products.asp?cat=NET

Hey Ralph,
I Guess I'm going to try the emailing them back to myself.....
I'm lacking cables,+ ports.....
Old 'puter has 2 phone/modem ports....
the 10/100 card...
2 USBs....
along with printer, monitor,etc.....
New 'puter has 2 phone/modem ports...
1 10/100 network port...
4 USBs on the back,+ 2 more on the face....
along with the various others, printer, monitor, etc......

Even if I could go USB to USB, the cables I have Aren't the Flat USB on Both ends.....

Sometime in the Near future I hope to be setting up a small Network.....
3 puters... Need to network Mine as master, then the gal next door(otherside of a wall, live in a duplex), Then a line out to the Garage/Office.. about 250ft.... I want to do it All Hard-wired... Not wireless.....
Still have to find the Router, etc... Been looking at tigerdirect.com... Not Expensive... Looks Pretty Simple.....
Trick will be, Not having RoadRunner Charging me for 3 'puters on-line.....
Haven't decided What to do with the old 'puter after I recover the Needed Info from it.....

Ya,
I saw that one when I used the link Ralph posted....
I'm pretty Sure that'll do All I need to do.....
There are printers at all 3 computers, so a shared printer really isn't needed......
But, Hey if it's there.........

BTW, What's a KVM switch ?????

A KVM-switch (Keybord Video Mouse)is to connect two pc's to one set of keyboard, monitor and mouse. By hitting a button you switch from displaying/operating one or the other. Saves space, energy and money...
A good one is TRENDnets 200:K.

Outpost.com has had a sale on the Uniden line of routers and wireless gear for some time now....I bought a few pieces a week ago, all works well.

Outpost --Uniden Router

Goto their site, and do a search for Uniden. On page 2 or the results, you'll see all the sale stuff. Offer is good until the beginning of March or until supplies run out.
