One problem with boats, is the engine and drive may not be the same year as the boat. An 85 boat could easily have an 84 or even an 83 engine.
If it's not the original outdrive, but still the original engine and transom shield, it's hard to say for sure what was put on there. An 85 would have been an MR, and the 83 and 84's would have been an R drive, in 86 through 90 they were called Alpha I. Prior to 83, they were called one drives. Basically, they were interchangable if they had the proper gear ratio and splined input shaft.
If you look at the picture below, you will see where the SN and gear ratio are located. If the number is unreadable on the decal, scrape the decal off and look under it, the numbers were also stamped into the casting.
If you have the serial number of the engine, we could at least tell you what year the engine is.
