I am hoping someone can guide me on where to look for the problem. The motor runs great but hops out of gear even at low speed.

Open the lower unit and inspect the clutch dogs and forward gear for wear......especially look for taper wear on the ends of the dogs and the internal cogs of the gears.

Thanks Eddie, it kind of feels like worn gears. I guess I was hoping for something easier. Any idea if these parts are available?

Thanks again for your help, this motor really runs great...I have to fix this, if I could figure out how to do it I'd send you a video I took with my phone. I felt like I could pull a skier:)

It may be easy - Most of those things have a two piece shift linkage running inside the leg from engine to lower u. The 2 halves of that linkage are joined under an oval plate retained with two screws. Pull the screws and plate, and you are looking at the joint, which is secured with a bolt. Loosen that bolt, for GOD's sake, don't drop it in the leg. Then it's just a matter of getting the lower in neutral put the shifter in neutral, and tighten the linkage bolt.

Thanks, Maht, that might be the problem as my first trip with the motor was great ran up to high speed for the lengt of a small lake then when I slowed down it started jumping out of gear. 'm going to tackle this any day now thanks for the encouragement. Ken

Sounds like a linkage thing to me, then - It stays in gear till the throttle is reduced because the mating faces of the drive lugs tends to make 'em stay engaged under a load. It's also human nature to assume the worst. Still do it myself sometimes. I'll be interested to hear what you find.
