If the ski is really malfunctioning and won't turn right then just keep hitting the gas...yeah thats the ticket

Re: JetFlea Stunt Goes Wrong

It didn't sound like it in the video, but a common blunder make by jetflea drivers, especially inexperienced ones is to shut the throttle in an emergency, then try to turn. With no flow, the ski won't turn.

Sometimes on these videos, the sound is out of synch, so that may be what happened here. Certainly, nobody would deliberately hit the side of a boat at full speed.

Still, the first mistake was driving the way he was in that group of boats. Absolute stupidity, and, based on the wake action at the beginning of the video, he'd been doing it for a while.

Absolute stupidity
Would you expect anything less?

I was up on a very quite and rather secluded lake. On a Friday, saw maybe five other boats and four jetfleas. Towing my daughter on a knee board, she fell. Before I could get my boat turned around to get her, I watched totally helpless as a jackass on a jetflea came within 10-15 feet of her.

Both my wife and I were yelling and waving our arms, but he just looked at us and kept right on going. I went back and picked my daughter up out of the water, she was fine. Then I chased the ja down. When I caught up with him, he said "Oh man, I'm sorry, I know that was kinda too close." I had a few choice words while my wife wrote down his reg #. I told him if he was really sorry, he would have come back to see if my daughter was alright instead of making me chase him down. I also told him I was going to report him since I had his reg. #. He then had the audacity to say that he hoped I wouldn't do that since that would ruin his weekend.

The following Monday I talked to one of the DNR folks at the park near the lake. He took all the information and told me he would issue a citation in the mail for "reckless endangerment" which was a mandatory court appearance and a minimum $200 fine. He also said the judges in that area are fed up with jet skiers and have been doubling and even tripling the fine.

The man at the DNR told me the key was getting his reg # and making the report. Without the reg. # there wouldn't have been anything he could have done.

Do I like jet skiers? Hell no. I don't trust them anywhere near me.

Re: JetFlea Stunt Goes Wrong

There are many jetskiers who boat safely. There are many who do not. I can't tell them apart without watching them for a while. So I assume that they're all part of the group that does stupid things until proven otherwise.

I give all personal watercraft a very wide berth, but sometimes you just can't avoid them. That's especially true at the ramp. All too often, I see them doing donuts right in front of the launch ramp, making wakes to make launching difficult. Often, they're doing this while they're waiting for the trailer to back down. It seems they cannot just sit there and wait, but have to do antics in the water around the ramp.

It's very annoying, to say the least, and complicates things for everyone. Never mind that it's illegal. The teenagers and 20-somethings seem to be the worst offenders.

While I will agree that a lot of jet flea drivers are idiots, most are not. It only takes the few jerks to give us all a bad name. Just like the few boaters out there who give boating a bad name.

I have owned my Sea Doo for about a month, and still am getting use to it. My 16 year old son loves it, and is getting quite good on it. A few years ago, we both took a boaters course and there was a lot of info on PWCs. I made him take the books out and go through it again before I let him go off with it. Of course, I keep an eye on him when he is on it, and let him know that if I ever saw him doing stupid things or heard stories, it would be gone. Thank goodness he is a well adjusted kid who behaves well (I have been told this by many folks). Still, I know kids will be kids, so I keep a tight eye on him, either from the shore when we take it out or from the boat when we take both out.

With all boating, it is a good idea to have a pencil and paper with you to jot the numbers down. Self enforcement is a great idea because the H2O cops cannot be everywhere all the time.

Why is that you never find water lice out in the middle of nowhere doing donuts? They are ALWAYS doing it someplace where others can marvel at how they can spin in circles.
They will also come really close to an anchored boat just to let us see them. When I'm fishing, that is REALLY irritating.

Just an observation.

I have to agree with CATransplant. I am now VERY sensitive about how close them things come to my boat or any one I am towing. I have no problem reporting unsafe jet flea operators, or boat operators for that matter. And if I have to go testify, I can do that too.

My life or the life of anyone I am responsible for is not worth me putting up with someone else's blatant disregard for safety laws.

Haha! The guy looks at the helicopter several times, and just keeps humping away. Then FINALLY the chick noticed, and then the fun was over... :D

Wow, what happened to innocent until proven guilty?

You take the guys number down and he automatically has to pay a fine for a ticket? He can't say I didn't do it, or prove it? Since you can't prove a negative.....that's totally not fair.

i disagree, the guy said...."i know i was too close" it would be different if he had no clue, then that could classify as an accident, but when you know that you were doing something you shouldnt have been doing, thats not an accident. a very good friend of mine killed someone in a horrible car crash, he was speeding and taking a corner too fast, the car fliped and one of 3 died. lesson: dont take other peoples lives in your hands if your going to screw around. when i feel like i have to play around i think of all the people i know or heard of and i learn from them. dont have anyone with you or put anyone else at risk. accidents happen. my friend is in jail for 20 years for an accident. he was my best friend for a while. ( untill his girl liked me) but i also knew a guy who HIT a downed skier on the head with his wave runner. this guy that i knew was a total moron, what do you expect. remember as your going threw life, there are people around you, the average person is really stupid, and then 50% of others are even stupider, so dont just be careful yourself be carefull of the poeple around you, they are stupid as well. accidents happen too much. its unfortunate. sorry.... just blowing some steam... thanks

Agreed, anyone could go up to a DNR officer and make up any story they wanted against someone.
That officer should lose his job if he actually issued a citation IMO.
