Now thats an Idea!!!:D

I did follow up with the guy today,He replied back that he would let me know the first part of the week.
He said he was incorrect when we talked about the pay scale.
Its 100 a day and a 20 dollar food allowance!
That is a shock!
Heck,
Petty was paying way more than that!
He also said days that i do not drive the rig it pays 70 a day to work helping out at the track and one of the truck drivers duties is to go get groceries for the team and cook for them in the infield!...What the heck!
12 hour days at 70 bucks!
And we have to share hotel rooms with another employee...

I'm just really thinking they are having a hard time finding anyone for this job.
Why would the guy who does the hiring not know this upfront?

So at 70 to 100 per day then taxes taken out thats terrible! Dirt wages,no insurance or benefits! I just can't believe they have come to this.
Tempted to write Jeff himself and give him a few words...

Anyway,The Frito-Lay people are offering 45.7 cents a mile with drop pay.Average 3 day trip is around 1200 to 1500 miles..
That would work out to at least 200 a day...plus drop pay..and they pay extra if i have to unload.

I can't believe These Nascar teams have had to cut back this much!

Not sure what i'm going to do at this point....

I may just keep doing my boat service business...Home every day, work my own hours and can make it on the profit...
I have had a couple 500 dollar days doing a few services....

Ouch Gary, that does not sound good, but keep the faith. Remember, you have to kiss a few frogs before you find the Princess. (or something to that effect)

I hear ya,

Working for Petty i was earning double that plus they paid 100% of my health insurance plus 40 a day food allowance. We also stayed in very nice Hotels, some were 400 a night.

The guy with Gordon said also at the end of the season he doubted i would be hired as a full time employee.
If i knew it would turn into full time and would eventually get benefits and a regular salary i would try to tough it out.
Thats no pay for living on the road though...
I'm really dissapointed!

I'm not a drinking man but have been tempted this evening...

Gary that blows, I guess being "Petty" was actually a good thing..sorry :D

I wish ya the best....If I could, on my next sales trip to Charlotte, I'd drag the B Ticket behind me and drop her off all week for you to wrench on!

My Company is cracking down on some of those 1800 mile round trip sales calls though, 55 cents a mile adds up quick!

Gary, That isn't great news and you have to make enough to put food on the table. But, I through this out for consumption.... It's a way in the door and very well could be a way to prove your dedication to the team. I think back about the AF Thunderbirds. When you applied, you had to dedicate a week of your time and no guarantee of a spot. Then when you were awarded a spot, you would get every bottom of the rung job until you showed them dedication. I kind of relate it to a greenhorn on a fishing boat or the greens on Deadliest Catch.... But, you have to feed the family and that pay makes it hard to do that. You will ultimately have to make a decision for what's best for you. I am sure you will. Hang in there.....

Gary just my opinion if you like working on boats and or boat engines keep doing that, because the one thing everybody likes to see is a happy guy working on their stuff and if you are happy they will be happy and so will all their happy friends that come to visit you to get their work done.Remember you don't need a job you just need to work to get paid, work your terms not theirs:D

That just plain sucks Gary. And that from my X favorite team. Wanting excellence for no pay is not how it's done. Sad, I'm now a FORMER 24 fan.

Really sorry to hear that. Sounded so promising earlier on. Well I know you will make the correct decision and the right thing for you will show up.
Keep your chin up.

Seventy to one hundred dollars a day, with no benefits and twelve hour days? The Gordon team ought to be ashamed of itself. If the team is, in fact, having trouble filling the position, its no wonder why. In fact, seventy bucks a day for a twelve hour day is less than minimum wage. Perhaps the letter that you write should be to the labor folks in Gordon's home state.

How about you tell the Frito boys that you will make ONE run a week, for 60 cents a mile, and you'll buy your own insurance.

That should leave plenty of time for for boat repair business, or boating.

Re: Job interview......about time!

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I pretty much decided the race gig is not an option.
They know the experience i have and that pay is insane.
Local dump truck jobs pay better than that...

With the race team i would be gone for weeks at a time so how they figure thats part time is beyond me.
It would be coming from one track to reload and go again.
I would not have a weekend at home for months then the job would end.
The guy stated they might use me next year but not a for sure thing.
So i would be back to square one come fall.

The Frito-Lay folks do want a part time driver, about one run a week.
That would give me time to do the boat thing too...
Plus they stated after working part time i would be at the top of the list for a full time job.Plus its year round work.
My brother used to work for Pepsi Cola who is owned by Frito-Lay and he was part time to start then a few months later was hired full time.
He said they have very good insurance and benefits.

I guess things will work out one way or the other..
I have 3 boats to do today,2 full service and one that needs an impeller on an outboard and LU oil change...All within 5 miles of each other.:)
Looking at about a 500 dollar day minus my gas expense...
Already have a couple jobs lined up for next week too...;)
And i ENJOY doing it!

Gary, sounds like you really could make a business out of your boat repair activities. It's making you decent money already, and you enjoy it. Can't beat that! Maybe look into a small business startup loan from the sba or something:

Re: Job interview......about time!

When my job "disappeared" over a year ago, I was at wits end. I had a retirement package but I was not ready to just stop working. I really enjoy doing the work I do out of my shop. I, too, just had a really good boat overhaul that I enjoyed doing and looked great when finished. I wasn't having those kinds of days at my old job.
It seems as if you get to work the FritoLay thing and have time to spend in the shop, things will work out. There has to be a lot of competition for the racing shop jobs due to the cutbacks of the teams and the decline in the economy in general. It looks as if the Gordon team is trying to take advantage of that situation....:(

Well that sucks . . . With the insanity of those numbers I must assume they want a retiree who just wants to hang around the track

I am still confused about something. What is Jeff Gordon Racing? I can't find any mention of that on his track. What car would you have been dragging?

Its down the road from Hendricks shop.
The cars they have in the shop are Nationwide series cars...Not sure who drives it.
It has a big sign on the building...Jeff Gordon racing..

From the looks of the shop this is a new venture. They did not have near the equiptment of the other shops i have been to.
There was a Dupont 24 hauler out back..
I was a little confused on this too QC.

Re: Job interview......about time!

Are you doing the marine repairs on your property,or from the back of your truck on their property?

If its the latter (much less overheads and tax liability););), print you up some business cards and always leave a few with the clients that you have served....And if it is not illegal to do where you are, leave some printed flyers and business cards at the nearby boat ramps.
