Re: Job interview......about time!

Are you doing the marine repairs on your property,or from the back of your truck on their property?

If its the latter (much less overheads and tax liability););), print you up some business cards and always leave a few with the clients that you have served....And if it is not illegal to do where you are, leave some printed flyers and business cards at the nearby boat ramps.

Most of my jobs i am going to them.
I have got some good customers so far that have passed the word along.

I am going to the printer to get some cards next week..;)

I figure all the years i have worked on motors and the last 15 years or so working on boats why not put it to good use.
My dad had me turning wrenches at 12 years old in his shop.
By the time i was 16 i could do about anything on a car.
My first car at age 15 had a motor i built and a TH400 tranny i put in by myself.I beat the crap out of that motor and 5 years later i sold the car and it was running strong.(good old days,Pontiac 400) I bought the car for 50 bucks...lol!

The stuff i have learned here and the help that Don S has been giving me is priceless...;)
I'm on a steep learning curve on Mercruiser....:)
I think i have read over all the Merc manuals in the Adults only thread...

It seems to me that this avenue may offer you the chance to make a lot more money with less liabilities, therefore more profit= more cash in pocket= better standard of living.
Self employment offers you the freedom and flexibility to earn more in less man hours, providing your services are of a high standard, marketed efficiently and competitively priced.
Nothing beats being your own boss, the first and foremost rule is having a good work ethic.
One year ago i was able to retire at the age of 50 after being self employed for just five and a half years, some good luck did have a big hand in me reaching that milestone, today i manage a few personal real estate holdings and spend my time fishing, traveling, meeting new faces, visiting iboats and a few other forums.
The main thing is i'm allowed to spend my time on myself and love ones at my leisure, not to be married to a job or company that casts one aside once their needs are fulfilled.
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, save and invest well, it will pay off in your future.

Re: Job interview......about time!

Thanks Vlad....
I have received several comments from my customers. All good.

My shoes come off anytime i get in a boat.
When the job is finished i make sure there is not one fingerprint or grease on anything. I carry a couple different Citrus based cleaners that are non-toxic and really do a nice job.
I treat the boats like my own and do the work in a timely manner. I always show up at the exact time that was appointed and work without any breaks.

So far this has really paid off with the customer. I have even got as much as a 50 dollar tip..;)
I don't ever expect a tip but its very nice when they feel its deserved.

Not expecting to get rich doing this at all but it makes me feel good to do a good job and earn the pay.

Gary knows i am doing very similar, but most of mine is at home, i have done several out calls. i have had to hire a part time helper. what i find most frustrating is waiting on parts.

Gary, it seems that you have found what you should be doing !!! supplement it with a little part time stuff when and if necessary and hopefully all is well. Keeps you at home around your loved ones as well. I travel, sometimes for weeks at a time around the world with my job and it get's old real quick. Many people seem to think it is "exotic" and great. I do it because it is part of my job. A 14 hour flight to the other side of the world on a regular basis is certainly not exotic in my book. It also reduces my boating season considerably.

Yes Ken,The travel does really get to you...I know to well.
Its like the Movie Groundhog day when your on the road for weeks at a time.
That part i do not miss at all.
Now that have got used to sleeping in my own bed every night it would be hard to live in Hotels again.
I sure missed all the boating time with my old job too....

Re: Job interview......about time!

Gary and TD I too am doing small repairs on outboards, I also have had much success with traveling to the owner and have seen some hefty profits, Last weekend I turned out 475 after parts and gas. As you said Gary always clean up after and NO SHOES onboard. The customers I have been working for all seem grateful that I am willing to come to them. I am also doing work from home, but the real money has come from being mobile, My buddy and I have a complete rebuild of a 50 yamaha sitting here waiting to be finished. Good thing we can get the parts at cost with no shipping :D The side work is almost getting in the way of the day job. :D:D

Gary, the dump trucks around here are slow right now, we are scratching for every job and every hour, we are working the trucks cheaper than we ever have, times are getting harder and the boats are really helping to meet the bills and other obligations.

I think I too, could quit the day job for the summer and make it doing small repair jobs.

Thats great TC!The dump truck jobs are the same in this area too...
I know the mobile part really helps with the boat service.
I think this venture will help get me through the summer anyway.
At least buy boat gas....;)

Heck,if i can make a couple hundred a day or more after expenses i feel good about that.I have hit a couple 500 dollar days.

Its nice working my own schedule thats for sure.

I could have had a couple jobs this weekend but i have a charity ride with over 50 bikes today to help a guy with cancer.
Sunday is my day to kick back...at least this weekend anyway..;)

Man! Thats a good one Don!:D

I have nothing personal against Jeff but he should know how his little race outfit is treating its workers.
Something that did get me was when i walked in the door of that shop there were signs on the wall to donate money to the Jeff Gordon foundation.
Heck, his employees could not afford to make donations..

When i worked for Petty i donated every week to the Victory Junction camp.
That is a class act! The things they do for sick children was impressive.
I donated some time working there with Kyle and Richard several times.
