Joe Reeves: 39 year old ignition switch burned up..

Joe,<br /><br />The original 1964 ignition switch burned up for my Johnson. Will any 5 post (lawnmower) switch work? If not, whats a good replacement??? I'm afraid an original replacement will be impossible to find.<br /><br />Kevin<br />Keyless in Oklahoma

What horsepower is the engine? Is the ignition a magneto setup or automotive ignition? I know nothing about lawnmower switches.

60hp distributor mag(I think, no alternator)<br /><br />just need to replace the ignition switch w/ one that will work.<br /><br />i have battery, start, accessory, and 2 other poles on the current fried switch, they had a solid black and a black w/whitehash wires on them.

If the plug wires come out of the bottom of the distributor, it's a magneto.<br /><br />If they come out of the top side areas, it's an automotive ignition setup.<br /><br />Which do you have?

You can use the ignition switch that is in use for the present OMC engines, part #508180.<br /><br />It has:<br /><br />(B) Battery - 12 supply<br /><br />(S) Start - Starter Solenoid<br /><br />(ACC) Accessory - Anything you want to power with 12 volts<br /><br />(M) Two (2) Magneto terminals. One to ground, one to magneto. The black & black/white you spoke of<br /><br />(C) Choke - You can leave the choke on the toggle switch or transfer it to this terminal if you prefer.
