Re: john/rude the only way to go

It's not the outboard brand, it's the maintenance given to it:D

One things for sure, you must be really good when it comes to taking care of your OB!

I've heard bad things about the major OB brands here, Mercs, Johnnys and Yammies, and I've learned to know a true fact: If you take good care of it, it sure will last and won't need to be towed:cool:

The only problem I have with my Evinrude is that when I go to the local dealer they try to sell me Johnson parts:eek:

Its like people arguing over which brand car runs better at NASCAR..ford/chevy ect..there's not enough "real" car left to make any difference..with outboards, yamaha used to make merc..tohatsu/nissan used to build for johnson/evenrude...who's building for who now,is anyones guess..as it was said before maintenance..good build day at the factory..lots of factors...i'll stick with my Suzukis...Built by Suzuki...aaaaso

last time I was out I saw a 50+year old Johnson pushing a pontoon not missing a beat. When I see a 50+year old ricer doing that I'll shut up

WHAT??? Hope you got yourself some Suzuki parts if your gonna work on those Johnson 4 strokes...:D:D

Also, didn't my dearly beloved Yamaha just sink some E-techy thing on a video being passed around here..??

And how many hours are the Coasties putting on those 4 stroke Hondas?? And why would a US Gov't. agency use them d@mn foreign motors?

Hmmm...give me some popcorn and I'll sit back a while and read all this incoming.....

And I think Nicco nailed the whole good motor bad motor thing down anyway. ;)

I thought of that exactly when I read this post.

If the original poster realized reality, he'd understand that the smaller Johnsons are built by Suzuki now. The Etecs are Evinrudes. But, then you look at Mercurys and say who makes them. Well Nissan makes them...But wait...doesn't Tohatsu make Nissan now?

Weird how that works. So, Johnson's may be like Ford trucks but don't the Rangers come off the Mazda B series line?

Guess what ??? you will, but Suzuki didn't make outboards 50 years ago..but there creeping up on it. And as for "ricers" your Johnson/Evenrude/Merc is as much a ricer as Suzuki...

:confused:I didn't know their involvement was retroactive. 50 year old motor in 50 years? the way all of them are built now I doubt we'll see them, well meybe in static displays in museums.

hooah!! gotta love the brand competition--take care of your business-don't let your business handle you--maintenance and it will last:D

:D Johnson/Evinrude owners are also better looking, smarter, harder working and just all around better human beings than all of the other brand owners! :D:D
(For the Merc owners: I'm just joking...I know you're a little slow sometimes :))

:D

There are tons of stupid stories down here, let me share some:

* Offshore Fishermen say the best OBs are Mariner/Mercury; why? because the sales manager is always ready to send mechanics to pick them up and fix their problem. Ah, but they say Yamaha and Evinrudes are the devil in blue dress; why? because their dealership sucks, and the service is not good. So, do they really care about the quality of the OB?...Nah, they only care about the service!

* I have a friend that has a 21' Robalo CC fitted with a Mercury Optimax. He fried the engine when it had only like 120 hours on it. He goes "this Mercury sucks, it fried on me!"...why did it fry? He did not service it at all, not even once!! I really didn't care about the excuse he made up, but he had to buy a new one. Go figure.

* Johnson/Evinrude had the biggest and best dealership in our country, but 10 years ago, they went bankrupt (not chapter 11) and closed their 3 national agencies. Now nobody wants an E-Tec, and God forbid a Johnson:eek:
My late inlaw had 3 boats fitted with Johnnyrudes; my 10' runabout aswell. He told me not to worry, he had all the service manuals for his OBs, and taught me how to do basic maintenance. The last 10 years we serviced the motors by ourselves, and they kept running great (until he died, and we lost all his boats:()
Point is, everybody here stood away from Johnnyrudes, saying they were no good, and the basic solution was to KEEP THEM SERVICED! (eventhough we had to import the replacement parts from Guatemala)

Now I have a Yamaha 4 stroke. I've never serviced one of these. So last week, I had it serviced for the first time (10 hours breaking in service). I let the Yamaha guys do the oil and filter change, and the lower unit oil change. I was there, watched and learned. I'm not paying for this again! I also asked the mechanic to teach me how to change the timing belt, but he just gave me pointers. I'm planning to get a service manual for my OB, but they aren't out just yet (it was manufactured in sept 2008).

I really beleive there is no "best" brand out there. All OB manufacturing plants are state of the art these days.

I agree with TD about some being easier to mantain than others; as well as parts availability, that helps a lot.

To OP, once again, if you keep towing boats with your Johnnyrude, is because you service it and keep it running good:)

Cheers!

Sorry for the long post:rolleyes:

As stated earlier, it's all in the maintence. No maintence = problem motor ala POS

Two strokes= lots of maintenance. Four strokes slightly less and more reliable.

WHAT?!?!?

What maintenance does a 2 stroke take?

As far as I'm concerned the OMC 2 strokes from the late 60 to the early 90s are the simplest to own and maintain. Parts are a dime a dozen and they are built and designed extremely well.
