Hi, this is what I did wrong ( Do not remove the adjusting screw. The adjusting screw does not attach the points to the stator plate and should not be removed. The adjusting screw is the screw that is smaller and farthest from the crankshaft and fits within an elongated slot in the points.) Well i removed the screw, what do I do now? Thanks Alex

Re: Johnson 3hp Sea Horse

Simply put it back in. Screw it all the way in, then back it out enough to be able to turn it back and forth to set the points (about 1/2 turn)

Re: Johnson 3hp Sea Horse

Well I tightend the screw and backed it off 1/2 turn what next.Do i gap the points now B4 I tighten the screws, the screw that is backed off 1/2 turn is a screw that its head is lop sided so it need s to be positioned at an exact place.I installed new points but dont know if its properly done ,where does the springs go ,do I use the little copper tabs to hold it to the point body.I need a pic or diagram if available thanks guys Alex

Re: Johnson 3hp Sea Horse

Thanks Admiral, well i have that site but it doesnt help me ,I need a more micro pic of how every thing it set up.thought someone would have a diagram or something on this site looks like i will have to visit the library to find a manual. The points have a metal tab that acts as a spring and it needs to be set up to act as a spring,so it is held in place some where ,I have it against a post but the kit has a brass or copper clip that will clip it to the point ,so i'm not sure if thats how its to be done ,boy I just started to do a tune up and a little detail like this has caused me to spend hrs trying to figure out.Maybe I'll be boating in 2020 or something lol.Even the screw that I took out is causing me grief.Maybe I'm not meant to be a skipper.

Re: Johnson 3hp Sea Horse

Well I did the tune up to the best of my ability,I'm at the stage to check for spark ,BUT nothing ,am I doing something wrong I wonder. It says in article to test the coil but I took a chance and hoped it was ok.Where do I go from here should I put tank back on and see if it will run.The coil points and condensor brand new.I tried turning the engine like article states and ground old plugs but I dont see and spark Thanks. Oh,forgot to mention I set the points by site, can't find my feeler guage,so I just set so it opens and closes a little bit would that affect spark.Or produce no spark

You cannot set the points by sight. You will never get it to idle right, if even start. The points need to open exactly 180 degrees apart, hard enough to accomplish with a feeler gauge and not a timing fixture, let alone with nothing.

Post pics of what you are dealing with. Maybe we can spot other issues.

Are each set of the points set to open at 0.020" exactly at the high point of the cam? It looks like in the 3rd pic that they are open and the cam is not all of the way around, but pics can be deceiving...
No, the flywheel does not have to be torqued down all of the way to test.

no I only set it by site ,they weren't set with a guage,I can't seem to locate my guage,I was just setting it without a guage to just chk for spark didn't think it had to be exact just to see if there's spark thanks

Yeah they need to be set by a gauge and just as importantly they need to have the same gap, even if it is slightly off from the .020" factory spec. Be sure the points are perfectly clean too. If they're brand new you're ok.Otherwise you way want/need to sand down the surface of the points with some very fine sand paper to remove any oxidation that might have accumulated. There's really no way to "eye ball it" effectively. Once set properly, you should be able set the flywheel on top and spin it a few times by hands with the spark plugs removed to check for spark. Here are some handy links.
