Re: Johnson 40 Electric Seahorse

Bad news. I did a compression test at a marina, and the mechanic said that both the top and bottom cylinders were reading in the high 60s. They should be MUCH higher he said...

He said this was an indication that both pistons/rings are bad and it would require an engine rebuild...

So, my question is this: How hard is this to do? Is it worth a try? I really don't want to put another penny into this thing if I should be retiring it and parting it out.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I got another motor that has cylinders in perfect condition. You can still see the cross hatching in them from the factory. However, the lower unit is cracked. I'd like to put my lower unit in it. How do I remove the lower unit? Step by step. It is more complicated than I thought. I can't release the shifting pin.

HELP!

Thanks

Did you actually see the test? I don't trust mechanics as far as I can throw them, and my heartfelt apologies to those honest mechanics who I have just offended greatly. Now if he said they were 60 psi, but wasn't trying to sell you anything, then that is believable.

Good point tx1961. But, I did see the test, and he told me straight out that unless I wanted to do it myself, it wouldn't be worth it to pay him to fix it. I thought that showed integrity.

So I went home and pulled the valve cover off. The cylinders were scored and scraped and I could see space between the cylinder wall and the piston. The rings were shot. No kidding.

I've dropped the lower unit on the crapped up motor, and am transferring it onto a different one with pistons and cylinders in great shape. Doing that now.

Cool. It's good that you had the two motors so that you can put one good one together. I think my 40 has pieces of 2 or 3 motors, but it's mostly a 1969 evinrude manual shift. But it has a lark cover on it.

Hey...is my motor an electric shift? If so, what kind of oil should I be putting in the lower unit and how do I go about doing this?

Thanks!

'Ya don't use muffs on that engine; gotta dunk it.....

<<)))(((>>

where should the water discharge be coming out? does the little rectangle screen on the left side supply water to the water pump or does it take it in from that fin on the bottom with a screen in it? where can i find information on getting to the water pump? does the water discharge come out the back out of the rubber hose? i have put the motor in a tank and can not get water to come out of that rubber hose. thanks

If is an electric shift, it will not have a manual shift cable and lever on the side of the engine. It will only have a throttle cable.
Changing the gear oil is the same on both. Remove the SLOTTED drain and vent screws and let the oil drain. DO NOT take out any phillips head screws. Fill from the bottom until it comes out the top and replace the screws. An electric shift gearcase uses Type C gear oil, while a manual shift gearcase uses 85-90W marine gear oil.

Re: Johnson 40 Electric Seahorse

Hey TX1961 - thanks for the info. I committed the crime of the century (actually, my buddy who was working on changing the oil committed the crime). He completely pulled out the philips screw, now I'm screwed. I can play around with the shift rod and get the pin back in A hole, but it locks the shifting mechanism in place and it won't move...

Any advice? How many holes to I have to thread they philips screw/pin through? I've got it through one, but that just locks the shifting rod in place - it can't move once I have it in. Could it be the fact that there is no oil lubricating it to help it move. Please tell me I'm not completely screwed here. I can't believe I did all I did to get this motor running (it runs really well now) and now this happened..completely avoidable.

Thanks tx. I can't find any pictures there that help me out...

I have put the screw through the shifter lever in the gearcase and it just locks up. I can't move it. Has something else slipped out of place. Do I need to pull that area behind the prop apart?

Re: Johnson 40 Electric Seahorse

Any advice on how to adjust the lean/rich mixture on this motor? The engine surges while idling. I've not put it in the water, but I'd like to get it tweeked and idling nicely. Any advice?

Thanks, all!
