I have just reconnected 55 johnson to battery and turned over for the first time in 5 months whilst on trailer. When I connected water hose (using suction cups) over the water inlet holes (fwd of propeller) I expected to see water being pumped through the engine to keep it cool, however only smoke is coming out of the two holes located just beneath the outboard cover at the rear of the outboard. Is water meant to be pumped out of these two holes or not? I thought it was a tell sign that water was being pumped through the engine to keep it cool when the motor was in the water. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have not re-started the motor since.

benl,

The engine has to start before it will pump water out of the tell-tale stream. It is a small stream, usually you can take the engine cover off and see the small diameter hose the water comes from.
I think the smoke you saw was exhaust smoke coming out of the two exhaust ports, created before the engine started.
From your post it sounds like once you saw the smoke you quit cranking the engine.(Probably not the worst thing you could do).
It sounds like it wants to start so try it,just be ready to stop the engine if the tell-tale stream does not appear.

benl....You will see little if any water coming from the exhaust relief ports while on muff's. The water will exit through the prop hub along with the exhaust. When your in the water though, you will see probably a fine mist which will increase a little once the engine gets up to temp and the t-stat opens. This is because when your in the water, the water is blocking the way out for the exhaust so you get some backpressure. The exhaust water will naturally find the exhaust ports. Put the muffs on it and crank it up.
