Hi Gents, I've been reading the forums for a few weeks now and you guys have a wealth of knowledge, hope you might have some experience with what just happened to me.
The engine: 81 J60ELCIA: new to me about 3 weeks ago. No history known. Run on the muffs like a champ, even had it in a barrel briefly and would go into gear(s) without barely changing from no load speed. Every time it was run in the driveway it had a real good strong (shooting 5 ft) pee stream, and the stream would get warm after a minute or so of running at 75F ambient, not sure of garden hose water temperature. Impeller seemed to be working ok so I decided to just change the gear oil, and go put the boat in the water for the first/last time before winter.
I opened the gearcase drain and vent (non electric ) and got clear water for a second before milky gear oil. The volume of fluid left in the drain pan was very little after letting drain for 2 hours. The neoprene washers on the drain and vent screws were obviously mangled and ruined by the previous idiot, so new idiot changed them and filled gearcase with around 30oz of fresh 90wt (Shell Nautilus) I also painted the lower for looks and to help to search for oil leaks in the future. No I did not paint over the water intake grates, or any drain holes
Next driveway run........ no pee stream! shut down, adjust muffs, try again, nothing! Tried 3 times before I gave up. Engine ran about 60 seconds, so no harm done but....Any ideas why new gear oil and cosmetic paint makes your impeller decide to commit suicide? Here's hoping when I do eventually drop the lower this winter, that I find all the impeller parts close to where they were originally and not jammed up in the powerheads water jackets
