Hi,
Just bought my first speedboat with a 1972 65hp Johnson, bought it as a none runner. Spent the lastweek generally working out how it works and what operates what. The guy I bought it off said it wouldn't start and gears didn't work. I noticed straight away that the selector switch in the throttle control box was seized, I pushed the switch back into neutral and the engine fired up on second turn of key (which I thought was pretty good after god knows how long the engines stood without being fired up). I tried to work the switch free but realised it was totally shot, and also that when I turned the engine off it jumped into gear with a bit of a bang.
After a few phone calls found out about a guy with an aladin's cave of boat bits and bought another battered up Johnson control box with a working switch and a linkage clip for the adv/redtard bar. Swapped the switches and the works fine, both forward and reverse work and doesn't stop suddenly when turned off anymore.
This is where i'm a little stuck what to do next, when the engines started and left to warm up a little it sounds to idle ok, then I put it into forward and rev it up, the engine sounds like it's running lumpy, but i'm not sure how it should sound with it being an old 2-stroke marine engine. what should I do next? stuff like gap settings and air/fuel mixture for example.
Also I've also noticed posts about a thermo choke, but after reading the posts and checking my engine it seams those purple wires go to different terminals than the ones they say can cause poor running.
Model number 65.E.S.L.72S
Thanks Paul.
