Johnson 6hp won't run slow

Picked up a used dinghy today and it came with a 6hp Johnson. motor runs good a rpm but won't idle or run slow. My first thought is the low speed circuit in the carb. I'm thinking a rebuild kit but thought I'd check with the experts first.......thoughts? Thanks in advance............John

I would. what year and model are we working on? post back.

It does sound like a carb problem, but I would check the spark and compression also. Either one of the above could cause the problem.

Not sure of the year....model number is 6RL79E.....maybe 1979?? Ser number is J5106337.

I'll check compression but it runs real good at RPM so I think it will be good..........THANKS!!

Question is, is it running on both cylinders?

If it runs well at speed then it's most likely a dirty low speed circuit in the carb.

Problem solved! Removed the carb, disassembled cleaned everything, blew out all passages, re-assembled and re-installed.......runs perfect!!!
