Quite briefly, water enters through the screen on the forward edge of the underwater exhaust snout. From there, it travels along behind the rectangular plate on the side of the gearcase, to the area below the stainless steel plate below the impeller, through the hole in the plate, acted upon by the impeller, out through the pump housing outlet, through the copper water tube, up to the passages under the powerhead gasket, then through the powerhead. All this will be obvious if you are trying to track down a blockage, which you probably don't have anyway.

I got it running and pumping water. It is leaking water from the left side of the powerhead gasket. Tried tightening screws , still leaks. Can I double up on the powerhead gasket? Needs carb works.. I kinda figured that. The tank water is very oily, is this normal? Or could it be from it running to rich?

oily tank water is from unburnt fuel and oil
you may have to pull the cyl head and resurface on 120 grit paper over a plate glass or large ceramic tile until you see bare metal all over.. regasket and torque to spec... retorque after a few hours

great motors btw run at 24/1

New gasket when the powerhead was removed to do the water pump work? Pull the powerhead and replace the gasket -- likely no sealant. Bolts have a torque value (84 inch lbs), and need to be installed using a circular pattern. Basically, a criss-cross pattern. Torque them half way, as with the head gasket, then full torque.

(referred to powerhead gasket leak in #7, but could mean cylinder head I guess.)
