good evening fellas,
i'm working on a boat that i recently accuired, 1988 johnson 110, vro is disconnected and plugged off. problem i'm having is that when i accelerate, the engine dies. i would not post this if i did not need some serious help......... compression is perfect, spark is fine, i've replaced all the fuel line, as well as the connector to the engine. carbs are done and cleaned perfect, now here's the deal..... went to the lake, accelerated and boat wanted to die. pushed the key in to activate the selonoide and the boat runs perfect with that fuel dumping into the carb. when i let the key back out, the boat dies. i've had my wife pump the bulb under acceleration and that does not help. the only way this boat will stay runnin is with the key pushed in. is there anything i have overlooked??????? again, all fuel lines are new and fine. i would love any input on this one. thanks, j.w.

hello
clean the carbs again.
remove the main jets. when you hit the primer it bypasses the carb circuits. if you have enough fuel pressure to operate the primer and it runs better you have clogged carb jets. good luck and keep posting

Just a further thought - can you rev the engine normally while the boat is stationery, or does it still tend to die?

rodbolt is right on. You have a carb problem. Your primer (choke) will only operate whith fuel pressure and it gets that from the fuel pump, so its fairly safe to say your fuel pump is okay. Tear the carbs down and preferably soak them in a good carb cleaner. I like Berryman Chemtool.
After soaking, blow out every orifice and make sure they are spotless. Set the float levels and put it all back together.

Don't rev the engine "with the boat stationary", JW. Revving a 2 stroke with no load on it is an invitation to disaster.

Re: johnson fuel problem, please help!!

JB

Thanks for your advice about not revving the engine when stationary. Maybe I’m missing something, and here’s my chance to learn.

I did not say WOT, because that is a specific which means exactly what it says. Here, ‘revving’ indicates increased revs, short of WOT.

The reason I suggested that, is because – as I’m sure you’ve experienced – sometimes a fault will show up when the boat is under way and has a changed angle, which will not show up while the engine is running with the boat at rest.

With your experience, there has to be a good reason why you would not increase revs on a stationary boat, but I can’t see it. If an engine designed to punch a heavy load through an unyielding fluid cannot withstand increased revs while lightly loaded, what other reason is there not to rev for the purpose of possibly isolating a fuel fault? Enlighten me please.

Ciao

Re: johnson fuel problem, please help!!

I had this exact same problem with my Johnson 50...disconnected the oil injection and pluged it. I finally asked an Evenrude Tech and he said to make sure that it is pluged off good. I got a new plug and it worked very well. This is a simple fix but it worked for me. I was getting air and the engine would go into S.L.O.W. mode and I would limp home at very low throttle. It may be something to look at if you haven't already. Skate
