Johnson Outboard Winterizing, forgot to turn on water

I was winterizing my 1962 johnson superseahorse and ran it for a little while with the muffs on and water running. I then turned it off and took off the gas line and turned it back on to let it run out the old gas before storage. It ran for 30 seconds to a minute and then died. It was then that I realized I hadn't turned the water on through the muffs for that last little bit (I know, rookie mistake). How likely is it that the impeller is shredded? It was pretty cold out so I don't worry about it over heating but I do wonder if the impeller or cooling system may have been damaged. Is there any way to check that other than taking the lower unit off? I could run water through it in the spring and see if it is circulating the water. I guess the only way to see it though is by taking the lower unit off.

replace the impeller in the spring.

It was wet and provided you did not rev the engine you may well be lucky. I'd just try it in the spring but be prepared to replace it. If it is nearly due for replacement do it anyway.

The cost of the impeller is small, time to replace is relatively short compared to the cost of the gamble to try and run without changing it.

in that length of time the rubber got hot, it is no longer reliable,

It's not worth taking a chance, just replace the impeller as several above have stated. I know you stated it was a Johnson Seahorse and I don't know if that's a 1 cylinder or more. If it's multiple cylinders you should really stay away from running out the gas as one cylinder may be forced to run dry for a little while. Just treat the gas and make sure the treated gas makes it to the carb(s). The only lubrication 2 stroke outboards get is from the gas/oil mixture so no gas=no lubrication.

Actually as long as there is only 1 carb the 2 cylinders will get the same amount of gas until it dies. But if you have a multi carb engine then if one carb runs out of gas/oil first you're in big trouble.

So, since I let it run out, should I hook it back up, treat the gas, and then start it to run it though the engine? Should I do that now or is it just the same to wait until spring? Thanks for the info.

My dealer told me to let me 2005 90 HP engine run out of gas. Then fog each of the cylinders with fogging oil. He say this prevents gas from clogging up the carbs over the winter. Doesn't sound right to me. Won't this probably damage the cylinders and rings?

Bronx68, you need to start your own thread, you will get a better responce. But to ansewer your question, if you have a multi-carb engine you should run the engine on muffs with conditioner in the gas. Fog the engine and when the smoke starts rolling turn off the key and then drain the carbs. A multi-carb engine will not run both carbs out of gas at the same time, meaning that some cylinders will be running without lube in them.

davydb, what horsepower engine do you have? Some of those engines could not be run on muffs, they had to be run in a barrel.

Re: Johnson Outboard Winterizing, forgot to turn on water

Daviet,
It is a 90 HP 2005 engine with dual carbs. Yes I agree running it until out gas could damage some of the cylinder. How would I drain the carbs after stalling it out with fogging oil? Is is necessary or could I put some type of fuel additive to prevent problems.
I also have an additional concern the gas in the boat is from last year. I won't get a chance to run the boat on the water anymore this year. Should I try and run all the gas out on a hose and add more gas/stabilizer?
