Look for the simple things first mainly kill switch. Will the mtr turn over when you try to crank it ? If not, maybe neutral safety sw or throttle handle not in the right position.

Well you have a kill switch because if you didn't the motor would not shut off. Look at the top of your motor where the power pack and voltage regulator are and you see those 2 black and yellow wire which have boot connectors. Unplug them and see if the motor fires but have the hose on because if it starts you will have to plug the wires back into turn the motor off. If it starts then you know it's and ignition prob, maybe a faulty ignition switch.

I think I talked to you at the Chula Vista Launch Ramp. If not disregard this. You are failing to mention that you replaced the ignition switch. Disconnect the black and yellow wire from the switch since its just hanging there, and see if it fires up. If you touched the black and yellow wire to the red and purple wire, AT ANY TIME WHILE THE WIRES WERE HOT (you possibly would have seen a spark if you did), it is possible you fried the powerpack. Also make sure that the terminal locations are correct. The black and yellow gets its own terminal, I believe terminal M. It is right next to the red and purple wire terminal, which is B. It goes like this: clockwise, terminal "A" Purple, terminal "M" Black ( next to terminal "A". there are 2 "M" terminals) terminal "B" red/purple, other terminal "M" black/yellow, terminal "S" red/yellow, terminal "C" purple/white. hope this helps...

OK so if you did that and it didn't fire (assuming it was the correct wire) then some other component fried. Continue down the list and test components, you'll need a meter and a dva for the high volt stuff. If you are the Chula Vista guy as mentioned above, did you replace the ignition switch and lose spark?

Re: Johnson pros i need help

yes correct i replaced the switch one wire at a time with the battery switch off to make sure i didnt short anything as a matter of fact just off the ignition switch is the plug into the harness i disconnected there so i had room to work not only did i double check my work i also called the seaswirl dealer to tripple check befor i pluged it in. So i pluged it in and it fired right up with no issue ran it for like 10 mins. shut it off with the key finished cleaning the boat and tried it once again and worked fine. The following morning went down to the ramp backed it down to the water and no spark. it turns over like a champ 12.5 volts on the v guage all other gauges work fine also all the warning lights work. by any chance are you local to s.d

I don't understand how it doesn't have a kill switch, my 83 Johnson control's have a kill switch, what controls are on your boat, your motor is a 96, something isn't adding up.

Making a statement like this will only confuse many people, there is a difference between a "kill" switch and an ignition switch.

Saying that because the motor will shutoff it has a kill switch will send some people scurrying around their boat looking for a seperate switch, when in reality many people know that there are several motors out there that do not in fact have a kill switch, they just have an ignition switch similar to what is in their car.

Do you also run around telling people that your car has a kill switch because you have a key?

Re: Johnson pros i need help

i'm having a similar problem. only difference mine will start up in the water but run like crap in forward. put it in neutral it clears and will tach up perfect. reverse it does the same thing. when i go in forward sometimes it shuts off and others i'm lucky enough to get to go a little bit and run at about 2 grand and thats wide open. but it works just fine on the hose. just wondering if anybody has had the same problem and what you gotta do to fix it. maybe tach it up till it blows and get a new motor? lol
