Johnson tilt and trim

I have a 1988 Johnson 40hp w/tilt and trim. I replaced the pump 2 years ago and have not been able to get the tilt to stay up. It will go up fine, but will creep back down. Has anyone had this problem, and what can I do to fix it?

you have a seal leak somewhere.

It will be easier to trouble shoot if you know whether the tilt leaks and the trim holds, or do both trim and tilt leak down?

It leaks on both. when I raise it all the way up it will not stay, nor will it hold trim when underway. It just keeps leaking down.

The first thing that you should check is that your manual release screw is closed and tight and the o ring is not leaking. There may be a leaking cylinder piston or sleeve o ring. It may also be an internal valve. Can you see any signs of fluid loss/leaking? Have you checked the level of the fluid then bled the system to ensure it is not just low?

rebuilt both cylinders and wont go up all the way
tryed bleeding system getting better,what is the correct
way to bleed the system.1988 johnson 40hp? nothing in
the book.
