Hi all, anybody else had the joy of replacing the impeller on the newer Mercuriser inboards that use the little tire pump for the water drain?

I have done about four of them now and must say I have not been able to find any short cuts. It is a very slow and frustrating job. The fuel lines run through the rear half of the pump assm and the air lines are very hard to get to. This prevents removing the whole pump for service out of the boat. Instead I have had to split the pump in half while it is still mounted to the engine. The back bolts are very hard to access and very hard to re install after replacing the impeller.

To top things off I have had some fail inside of the 300 hour service.

Anybody else been enjoying this? What were the engineers at Mercruiser thinking?

Anybody figured out how to remove and re route the fuel lines and air lines so the whole pump can be removed? I would look into this more but so far all the ones I have worked on have been v-drives and there is not enough room to remove the whole pump. Maybe on the inboard?

Thanks for letting me vent, Dale

We have 3 boats with that setup. You're lucky, the ones I do require an engine pull to get at them. How would you like to pay that bill every other year. These are on I/O's.

Hi Don, pulling the engine - wow that is bad. Let me know if you have any interest in replacing the stinking Merc pump with one of the Johnson pumps that bolt on the front end of the crank. I looked into this a few years back but did not get around to installing any. I sourced some parts and have some part ideas that would help if you want to try this.

Take care, Dale

I too have had a few engines out to do maint. some on the 6.2 a few on the 8.1's.
seems its very tight with the engine out then they stick it down a hole and you can feel it,see the drive pully and thats about it.
I always hated strendrive even though they have made a lot of payments, I now absolutly detest them and they comprise about 80% of my workload.
I have developed an attitude, I did not design it nor broke it and it aint my money.
it gets me through the day.

Re: Joy of replacing impeller on 2004 6.2 Merc inboard

Hello all, new member here. I have attempted to change my impeller on the 8.1 and the real physical obstacle for me was the fuel filter. When I removed it, the filter mount dripped constantly. I don't think I have a fuel shutoff valve that would minimize this. ARe there any tricks of the trade to prevent the dripping. With the fuel filter out of the way, I think I could get the pump housing off. Thanks for any tips.
Chris

Welcome to iboats Chris, when you have a question, start a new thread or it will get lost in the middle of someone eleses thread, even if it is related or identical. You can always refer to another thread, just don't use it as a place to post your own question.

A needle nose vise grip clamped on to the fuel hose will stop the gas if dripping from the anti siphon valve. If the gas is dripping from the fuel pumps cranking the engine over a bit with the fuel pumps un-plugged should help.

Hope this helps, Dale
