went in to the e.r friday with major swelling in my arm, dr took one look at it and said abcess, with staph infection. he says staph is on the rise here recently. i dont recall cutting, scratching or doing anything else to my arm, it just ballooned up in a matter of a few hours. so, be careful and if you start swelling or getting red streaks, see a dr soon.

Glad you were smart enough to get it checked out. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Glad your OK, too. would've gotten a lot worse, fast, if you didn't get it taken care of quickly. Don't stop the antibiotics when the symptoms go away. Take them as advised until they're gone. Too many people stop taking antibiotics when the symptoms are relieved. This is one of the most notorious means of creating resistant strains of bacteria. The antibiotic becomes a vaccine for the bacteria if you don't finish the prescription and kill all the bacteria. Again, glad your OK. Have a speedy and complete recovery.

It is probably MRSA? I had a bout with it also, looked like a spider bite. There is a surgical body wash you should use also... I cannot remember the name. Bleach your shower everyday. It will go away in couple of weeks.

Is there any real long-term risks of staph infection? Does anyone know if it can actually become deadly? I mean someone who has a normal immune system, not a compromised immune system.

It can be really deadly. Don't mess with it. There are instances of an infection from a scratch killing normal people.

I sawed a couple of fingers off about 20 years ago. I had to have them re-attached. They gave me IV antibiotics for a day, then pills for a couple of weeks. There was a little staff infection in the cuts that we got "under control" in a few days. Healing seemed normal, stainless nails were pulled, rehab, etc.

That was in October. I felt like chit all winter, and seemed depressed for no reason. Doc was about to send me to Mayo for a work up when I decided to start drinking hydrogen peroxide in March. After about 2 weeks, I all of a sudden had zits, boils, puss coming out of all openings. I had to shower 5 times a day just to keep the stink down. After a couple of days, I was fine. My body had just finally gotten strong enough to deal with the disease.

I have a strong immune system. Near as I can figure, I had one of the superbug staff infections, only sub clinical. It didn't even raise my white cell count much.
