Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

I have never had that sort of issue. When we go out we know its for the day and everyone knows that beforehand. Besides, no one ever WANTS to go back, we just have to because we ran out of food and drink! Sometimes I have to make two trips to the destination to get all the people and equipment there (like grilling on the beach). So I'm not going to packup and leave because someone realized they had to be at work, or had a date, etc.

Bottom line is if you can't stay for the alloted time of the trip, then you are just not going.

If someone pulled a "got a call, a friend is waiting for me at my house" or any other "emergency", I would tell them to call their friend back and have them make other arrangements. I am not ending the outing because someone I don't know is being inconvenienced. Too bad for them.

Yeah, I understand that but then Girl #1 would think I was a jerk :)

This way I end up looking like the nice guy I am. However if I was in girl #2's spot.

Say I had a friend coming to visit, and he told me he'd call me before he left. He didn't call me and just showed up at my place early, I'd have told him to figure something out for a few hours and I'd be back in.

Go to the beach, on a walk, to a restaurant or something like that.

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

Everyone who goes out with me knows my rules. I'll make an unscheduled trip back to land only for safety sake, like lightning.
Falling overboard and being cold for the remainder of the trip is not my problem; seasickness is not my problem.
I love going out by myself so I don't have to put up with: 'we should go over there' or 'we should get closer to that boat cause they're catchin more' or 'I gotta do a #2'.

I let the other freinds with boats take those folks out on their boats. I may see them along side while out there, whilst I enjoy my solitude.

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

another side of this issue is that you can't predict time when boating, so never promise to be back by a fixed time--unless you give yourself an hour or so lee way and cut your trip short. If you tell someone "5" and then you have typical boat issues and get back by 6 someone is mad at you.
Also "being back by X" has to include squaring the boat away unless that person has her own car at the dock and can leave you to deal with the end-of-the-day procedures.

You guys sound like some serious, up-tight boaters!

How do you handle informing guests of your rules and regulations and schedules on your boat? Do you have them posted so they can read them as they come aboard, or do you just line everybody up at attention on the dock and announce them before you leave?

Must be a different attitude down here. We go out on the boat to enjoy it and have a good time. If things aren't going quite the way you planned, deal with it and enjoy your time with families and friends! We've had few people that had to go in early because of emergencies over the years, but the vast majority of the time we have the opposite problem, they don't want to leave!

Sounds like the OP's situation would have been a perfect set-up. He couldn't have arranged it better if he tried. Have Jen's friend come pick her up at the dock, then take Erin back out so you guys are by yourself!

You just tell them that we won't be back until 8pm !!.
If they have a problem with that then don't get on my boat ??. :)

Its my boat my gas & drinks so a single quest isn't going to control what I do.
I'm NOT driving 21mi's back to the dock so someone can get some nookie or something else. :D

This is the reason I have a very small, select group of people that I ask out on the boat. Even then, I ask them to drive to the dock. Heck, with 2 small kids, my wife takes her own car just in case one blows a gasket. The dock is 2 minutes from the house.

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

A sick kid or mother in the hospital would end a trip lickitey-split, but to just go hang out with someone else after they made plans with me would get a very loud laugh out of me. Courtesy is a two way street. Once someone makes it clear they don't care about my day I wouldn't care about theirs either.

It's just common sense...

I guess it bears mentioning that when I go out it isn't to the river or lake 10 minutes away from my house, it's to the gulf that's an hour away. By the time I add up gas in the truck and boat, drinks, ice, bait and ramp fees it's a $120 day for me and I rarely get an offer from a passenger to help out with that. In my life $120 is nothing to laugh about. I'm not going to **** it away so a non-boater that came out for the day can go hang out with a friend and ruin my day.

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

2 years ago, we bought our second boat, brand new. A working friend of mine that lives 100 miles north of me wanted to go to the lake on that particular week-end. I agreed.

The lake that I like to go to is 96 miles from my house. He had about the same drive, from the city to my house. I had advised him to drive to the lake, as it was the same distance, and would be quicker. But, no he wanted to drive to my house instead.

First of all, he'd never been to my house, and I gave him a map (a state map), with the route high-lighted, so he could easily find his way.

There are 2 highways that run out of Kansas City, that are similar. 169 highway, and 69 highway. Naturally he took the wrong one. (He did NOT follow the map). He got all pissy, about me living in BFE etc. He kept calling, telling me where he was, etc., so I waited on him.

He finally arrived. We left for the lake.

I had told him that I would fill the boat up with fuel, have pop, and water available, and buy lunch. (My boys were kinda getting impatient waiting on him).

We went out in the boat, ran around for a while, went to eat, then went tubing, and finally anchored off to swim. He never had put on his swim suit, so I assumed that he had it on under his jeans.

He sat in the boat, and pouted all the time.

I have a NO SMOKING sign on my boat, and he lit up. I halted that !!! He didn't like it T O U G H !!!! He knows that I don't smoke, and he don't smoke in my truck, so there shouldn't have been a question of smoking in my boat !!!! FInally ended up taking him back to the dock, and he went home !!!!!

I did NOT ruin?change my plans because he couldn't follow a highlighted map.

YES, we are still friends, and all, and we still work together. BUT, I'd have to really give it some thought BEFORE I invited him to go again !!!!!

As far as the cell phone thing, we each have one (the four of us, me, my wife, and 2 boys), but if you are pick up the phone and start texting, etc., I will stop the boat, and wait until you are done !!!!! I have only had to stop the boat for one person one tme, and they got the hint !!

Am I a jerk over smoking, anc cell phones !?!? Yeah, I gues that I am. But, I am providing the boat, the insurance, the water toys, the food, the drink, the gas, etc. I'm not asking for anything. So put your smokes and your phone up !!!!!!!!!!!!! (We carry one on board, for emergency purposes only. I personally have received calls texts, etc., while out in the boat, 'cause I've heard them come in. I have a very noticeable ringtone. It goes unanswered !!! NO ELECTRONIC LEASH for me while out in the boat !!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!! I just realized a huge upside to my 280 mile tow which leads to long weekends and nobody on a different agenda.

We do have the occasional issue where somebody forgot something in the truck or somebody has an emergency need for semi-sophisticated plumbing. Just part of the deal and I get to run the boat more. But we almost never have people hold us up. They kinda can't as they usually ride with us out there or we carpool as I like having someone to help me if we have vehicle/trailer issues.

LMAO Mark!! :D

I've been on Iboats for 8 years and 204 Escape is the ONLY person I've ever put on my "Ignore" list. Go to "User CP" at the top left, put him on the "Ignore" list and none of his posts with that obnoxious font will show up. Just seeing what you snipped out of it in your post is bad enough ......

My phone does not work at the lake I go to. Some people think I need to switch carriers. No me!

Re: Just as I dropped the Anchor..... a girl on the boat says "we need to go back in"

My cell phone works at the island where I go, but I tell people it doesn't! We don't have a phone out there, just a VHF radio. The only access is by boat. It is a great place to get disconnected and unplugged! I don't want anyone thinking they can call me to come get them at their leisure.
So we check the tides and we tell the guests when we will meet them at the landing. If they miss the pick up, and the tides permit, we come back an hour later. One good session with the horseflies and they get more punctual.
We also tell them what time we can take them back to shore. If the photo attachment works, you will see why we don't go anywhere at low tide.
