Just bought a '62 Evinrude Sportwin 10 HP

I just boat my first boat and motor today, the guy had the motor running when I was there, it sounded pretty rough, but it allegedly has old gas in it.

I got it home and I have been searching for information on this particular motor.

Just after a check-over of the entire motor I noticed a few things I questioned,

Where the motor pivots on the part that clamps to the boat, it is very loose (where i am pointing in the picture), like it is missing a bearing, what should be in there? You can see from another angle that there is an odd bolt with about 6 washers on it, so that area has been tampered with.

Also wondering what the black rubber "button" is underneath the carb adjustments is.

Tomorrow I will be getting fresh gas, new spark plugs, bottom end oil and a primer bulb for the fuel line.

My knowledge in engines is mostly with 2 and 4 stroke 3-wheelers so the boat motor is a bit different was hoping you guys could help..here is a few pictures. All of the bolts in the motor look like they have never been turned, so that is a very good sign.

The button is a kill switch. If you touch it while the motor is running, it'll send 10,000 volts up your arm and send you across the street into your neighbor's yard. Just kidding

If the swivel tube is sloppy, then it's likely that it is well worn. There is a tension screw on the side, with a spring on it. If you can tighten it up, that should help tighten things up, so it doesn't turn so free. If it's still sloppy after tightening up the screw, then you may have to replace the tube and the parts that it goes into.

The engine looks pretty clean. I'd pull off the pull starter and remove the cover over the coils and check their condition.

The bolts/nuts you point to are not original. They should be acorn nuts.

I have the parts manual for the '62 Johnson 10hp if you want it, they are extremely similar. Private Message (PM) me your email and request if so.

It does look likes someone has messed with the lower horseshoe bits. There are two rubber mounts under those covers. Quite possible one is sheared off. There is also a nylon bushing that seats up into the swivel tube that helps keep the tube from getting sloppy. If that bushing is worn, or perhaps inverted (lip side down), that could cause your issue, too. Removing those covers won't reveal any mysterious bits - nothing's going to jump out at you. Take a look and see what's going on....

I think you should toss that motor out alongside the road someplace. In front of my house would be the ideal place to toss it. The 1962-63 10hp is one of my favorite portable fishing motors. I need one.

The only weak spot is the lower units. They are easy to destroy by running it without oil or water in the lube. So check that oil.

Get that motor down in the water before running it. The bulge above the bucket has to be submerged before starting the motor. The motor doesn't show signs of overheating yet. Don't be the 1st to fry it.

Haha I figured it was either that or self destruct so I didn't push it.

Do you guys reccomend a carb kit for it, I'm unsure if it still hasa cork float in it. Or is just a good cleaning of the carb a good idea. I will post a vid of it running when it does. Got to find a deeper bucket first

I replaced the fuel line, put in a primer bulb. New spark plugs and gas. It starts up easily now but is running quite rough. I have a video but won't be able to post it until tomorrow.. I am going to clean the carb tomorrow night but I think it may be an ignition problem. What should I be looking for under the recoil? How can I test this?

Once you remove the recoil starter, you should see a small plate on the flywheel held down with four screws. If not, you'll have to pull the flywheel.
Doing so, you'll be able to check the condition of your coils and points. The coils should be clean and no cracking. The points should be clean and set at .020.

Removing the flywheel requires a puller that pulls from the 3 bolt holes in the center. NEVER use one that pulls on the rim.

Before you put that flywheel back on, the tapers must be clean and dry, and you must use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 40-45 ft/lbs. Failure to do so is one of the major things that destroy these fine old motors.

I have been reading the top secret thread so I have some idea what I am up against. No differant than other flywheels I have had to pull..I ordered a carb kit new coils, condenser, and points from napa tonite. I haven't checked any of it..but for 80 bux I thought that was alright to just replace it all.

I have a big fishing trip planned for early june in northern manitoba so I don't want to be stranded!

Be sure to test the plug wire resistance in each. Bend them while testing to check for breaks....Or just change the wires. Broken wires show symptoms of every other possible problem ie, carb, coils, plugs and so on. KNOW THEY ARE GOOD. When you get the coils, points and condesors on, test the coil all the way to the end of the plug wire before putting the flywheel on.
Get a water impeller reguardless of how the old one looks.

It looks like the bolt with washers is a rigged version of the rubber mount...minus rubber. It should be a bushing with a cone nut on the outside as well as a cone nut on the inside of the midsection.

Since I have my paternal grandfathers neptune mighty-mite I'm keep my
eye's peeled for the maternal grandfathers evinrude 5.5 fisherman.
I think I have it narrowed down to 1960. But I'm going on my memory
from when I was ten.

Well, I started tearing into it today, removed the carb, and now am wondering what the factory settings were for the adjustment screws are...I am pretty sure they didn't spin any but it would be nice to set them back to factory so i know they are right.

Other than that, the carb looks very clean, all jets were clean and no sign of any gunk. It has the old cork float in it, which is also in good condition, what causes them to go bad? The rebuild kit I bought didn't come with a new float.

I then took off the recoil, and the points cover to see underneath. I don't know a thing about points or setting them, but I did notice that both coils are all cracked up.

I then removed one side cover of the steering stem which covers the rubber pads. both sides still have the pads, but the one other side someone drilled a hole right through the rubber and stuck a bolt through.

On further inspection of the steering stem, most of the slop all seemed to be just in the rubber pads.

Where can I buy factory parts for this machine? or is most of it discontinued?

Where is the water impeller located? I would like to check it out, the guy I bought it from said he had just replaced it.

Thank you guys for all the help so far, I have been looking for a service manual but am also in a bit of a hurry just to get this thing going so I can test it before my fishing trip. If anyone has a used one for sale PM me!

It sounds like you need new coils but you ordered them, so that's good.

The impeller is on the top of the lower unit. You must remove the oval plate on the side and remove the lower shift rod screw and then remove the 4 x 7/16" bolts underneath that hold the LU on, then it should drop off. Then remove the 3 or 4 screws holding on the impeller housing to see the impeller. I did it on my 6hp today and it's pretty much the same.

Get a used rubber mount, they should be plentiful at a used place as they rarely go.

And you can read how to set the points in the top secret file I believe.

Just stopped back in to let you guys know I have this motor running great now! Thanks for all the help, couldn't have done it alone!

I had it on the water last weekend, trying to do final tune-ups on the carb, wasnt too fast, but it seemed to be revving right out. Then again, it was pushing a 16' alum boat and 3 adults.

I am going on a big fishing trip next weekend in Northern Manitoba. We will be portaging the boat and motor into Phillips Lake, Hopefully will have some pictures of the boat in the water...Thanks again

Congratulations on getting a fine old motor going! What did you come up with for the shock mounts? They are still available ($$$) except for one- the top center one. My '83 had all of them broken, and I had to get creative with the top one.

Chinewalker sold me a mount so that is now replaced and working great.

I am replacing wheel bearings, tires, and bow rollers on my trailer to get ready for the 1600km round trip.

I will let you know how it works up north
