I for one (being the thrifty person that I am) would much rather pay alittle for a truck engine versus the HUGE money they get for a "marine" engine. Hecj, go on ebay and look for engines - I could get a replacement block for my 4.3 for under $200.00!
Just my 3 cents worth (adjusted for inflation)
:)

Re: Just clearing the air

the valve guide thing was funny though. I cant remember any american production heads that actually run removable valve guides. most all I ever cut the valves and knureled the guides on were plain cast iron, as in just a hole drilled in the head.
the advent of the center valve cover bolts was the same year as the one piece rear main, about 85. by 87 all the 5.7 motors had eliminated fuel pump mount as the auto industry had gone to FI. but as merc and others purchase units in large quantities there were a few years more of external mechanical pumps in boats.
and while the 400 was externally balanced and the rest of the SBC line was internally, not sure about the 6.0L merc, there were about 10 different harmonic balancers as the cranks were balanced differently. the 5.0 and 5.7 had the same forging numbers and same stroke and journal dia's the balance was different and would vibrate if the correct balancer was not used.
its been a bit since I did the hot rod thing so I cant quote part numbers anymore.
almost every SBC,7.4 and 8.2 and 8.1 motor I have taken apart had steel shim head gaskets as production use. if you wish they are availible for reinstall but I dont recconed the field tech to use them as surface flatness of the head and deck is rather critical and hard to achieve without surfacing.
as far as the water pumps go merc buys them from GM, in fact GM changed the seals a few years back and cost merc a bundle as the new seals were not compatible with raw water cooling and the pumps dropped like flies.
as far as the heads I have never seen a difference between a production auto/truck head and marine in the same HP class motor. in fact a few of the HP auto heads actually flow better. myself i have never seen a reverse rotation motor with an outdrive from any make but it would not suprise me.

Well,..........You're Pretty Close,.........
pronounced,....Aye-yuh......

It does mean, Yes,.. Yup,... Correct,... Afirmitive........

It's also Much more localized than New England,....
Definitely Doesn't have Anything to do with Northern Ny,.... Other than I'm a Native Maineiac, who happened to settle Here......... ;)

It's from the "DownEast" dialect,.........Please don't confuse it with the Funny Talking Bleeding Heart Liberals of Massachusetts,..!!!... :D

DownEast is a Small area of the Maine Coast,.... though the boundaries are Not well defined,... Generally,.. DownEast Maine starts about where the Penobscot River(the creek I was born,+ raised on,.. Grandparents Bond lived on it's shores) flows into Penobscot Bay, at the Coast,.... Up the coast easterly to Eastport Maine,... The most Easterly point of Our Country.....And,.... Encompasses about 30/40 miles Inland,+ All the Many Islands Off that Coast............

Basicly,.... The dialect can be interpreted by Removing "R"s from All the words,+ inserting an "ah" in place of the "R"s.........

Sooo,....... Ayuh,... It's My heritage,+ where the Best, Tastiest Lobsters grow.... Not where I live Now........... :D ;)

Re: Just clearing the air

Bondo,

Looks like we grew up in the same neck of the woods. Right at the mouth of the penobscot river for me in Stockton Springs. Was just back there week before last. Makes sense now on the "AYUH"...just hadn't seen it used in print. I'm thinking you were around Bucksport???

KJ,

The old 888 is resting comfortably in my garage waiting my lazy butt to get the stringers and floor finished in the Commander. Help is supposed to be on the way, but I might have gotten short changed on my "you work for me for a week" and "I'll help get your boat floor in"...

Check out my post in the Restoration section..

Re: Just clearing the air

JK,

Almost forgot. I decided to put the Alaska trip off until the engine goes back in the boat. That way whan I ask a question in "Person", I can see how friendly the reply will be...lol
