What a dumb arse I am .My son gave me his used ALPINE Deck, CD, TUNER 45w x4chan Its like 8 yrs old but would have been a nice upgrade to the 18 yr old cassette, 22wx4, with no am. Like to listn to base ball and weather. I wanted to test it before install so I hooked a couple 1 ft jumpers Black wire to neg and red and yellow power to the pos term, hooked right to the boat batt. I was holding the deck in my hand and it powered up nicely......Then.... I carelessly let the chassis of the deck-metal, touch the pos batt term. Direct short- ZAPP!...Instantaneous death, no fuse. Alpine guy said its toast. Bonus! I had already pulled out my old deck:facepalm::confused: Duh...What the.....Took the top off the deck hoping I could figure out sumtn'..not good.

Sorrry to hear it PJ, and hard to believe it can't be made right. That overload had to go through something, and cause damage, but I don't want to think it's unsalvageable. If you were here in Toronto I'd be happy to have a look at it for you; what I'm thinking is there is no fuse because there usually isn't one on the ground, but the overload path had to go through the ground line and to the case somehow. I'd look for where the overload current burned out a connection as if it were a fuse. If the ground line goes directly to the case first, try checking the ground wire, or simply replace it with a known good one and see if that solves your problem. If the ground line goes to a circuit board first, then is connected to the case, follow the ground line from where it comes into the chassis all the way to its case connection. I think there will be a burned connection or a burned out section in a circuit board trace that you need to reconnect with a jumper, either way you're looking for a break in the ground line. If you look carefully you may be able to find it, I sure hope you try and succeed!

Most tuners are built with a safety diode circuit designed for just this scenario, if you are familiar with electronics I may be able to walk you through it. Otherwise, seeing that you are in Eagan, if you want to run it up the the North Metro Twins Cities I can check it out for you. Just shoot me a PM here on iboats and let me know.

DAMN Just deleted a long reply to both of ya. Hate that !!! Gonna be short now. Great replys from both of you. Reckrider , I took the top off just for that reason, However , all you can see is the mechanics for the CD player ,. The electronics are DEEP. Will take a bit of dissassembly. But I will take another look.
Sixmark ... Generous offer!!! what town are you in? I will PM you, probably early next week. Rockn out this wknd at 93 X fest. I do have an electronics background. See my sig. So I will 4 sure take a look an figure something out. THANKS guys , have a good wknd!!!

I have taken auto CD players apart before, and I remember seeing a tiny glass style auto fuse under a plastic cover. Not sure if yours has that, but if it's toast, what would it hurt to look?

On second thought, let Sixmark look...:)

Is there still continuity between the negative wire and the chassis?

Decks are not expensive for a CD deck with ipod input. They can be had for pretty good prices. the deck was 8 years old and though it was fine, I would just replace it and chalk it up to experience.

Re: Just fried my new to me boat stereo- Cd,tuner- B4 I got it installed !!!

I may have dodged a bullet. ALL you guys gave me some GREAT thoughts, I put em to use , And its working ! Quick rundown FYI ...Fireman, I remember seeing those fuses before as well,I couldnt find one on this deck. Nybo and Wreck Rider, Checked continuity from ground to deck. This deck has the ground wire , built into the 18 pin plug, Not an external direct to chassis ground. the ground wire had cont just to the deck, at the plug. Then it was gone, checked everywhere with my meter. looked with a flashlight and mag glass for a burnt ground, something out of the ordinary, found none. So I figured WTH. [BTW, this is all on a bench, with a car batt]. I just hooked a jumper wire with 2 allig clips from the neg batt term directly to the chassis, And I be danged if she didnt power up!!! Hooked up 4 speakers, dropped in a CD and ran it hard for an hr...Yee Ha ! sixmark, may I have just bypassed the safety diod this way ? I been outa work for quite awhile, so as mush as I would like to go get a new one, Its nice if I can limp this along for awhile. Thx for the thoughts guys, ya got me thnkn bout grounds, and wa-la ! I will give a quick report after i get it mounted and set up..THX!

Any thoughts on this fix from you electronic geniuses ? Is there anything else i should do ? Did I just fix a leaky roof by putting a bucket out. Or can I just run a chassis ground directly and run it ?

BTW [unless i am missn something and something else is still wrong with it] It shows that you have to take what cust support people tell you with a grain of salt. I called Alpines, and the tech said it was fried and i should get a new one. she didnt even suggest that I might try a chassis ground and fix it in 30 seconds for free.

There is no harm or danger in using the chassis for the negative lead. Party on!

Customer service techs follow a flowchart, the companies don't feel it is cost effective to have anything repaired at the component level, this is why I spend alot of time repairing motherboards, LCD monitors and various other electronic devices. Component repair is usually anywhere from 25-50% of replacement cost.

Glad to hear you got it working, now just don't water it, or use the CD player as a place to hold a stick of gum (I have kids, they have proven it's a bad thing).

Hey, got my deck mounted in the boat, 4 speakers hooked up and it seems to be working like a champ!.:D Im SOOOOOOOO glad I posted my issue on this forum,;) I was ready to toss it ! So , thanks ya'all for your input and saving me an easy $200.00 +. All I had to do was add a chassis ground and eliminated the ground wire in the plug. She will get her first splash this weekend I hope. Finally getting some 80s plus sun...:D:D

Re: Just fried my new to me boat stereo- Cd,tuner- B4 I got it installed !!!

I believe I just fried my Pioneer CD/XM Tuner (DEH_P5500MP) and my Humminbird SX100 depth finder. Thought they were fuse protected because there is an in-line fuse wiring. Unfortunately it was a fuse for the XM transmitter. They were both direct wired into the battery and i mistakenly hooked up positive lead to negative terminal and negative lead to positive battery terminal. Saw in these threads that I may be able to find a work around by taking equipment apart and looking to reconnect the grounds. Any thoughts on the depth finder? or specifically the pioneer stereo?

thanks

Hi JIMK, welcome. Though some of my posts responses may apply to your issue, you would be better off, starting a new thread all of your very own . Go to the electronics section and basically retype what you just posted on my thread. You will get fresher answers that are more on topic for your particular problem. There is alot of friendly knowledge available here ! Good lock with your depth finder etc !;):):D

BTW, mine is still going strong :D
