Slow down a bit, pard. You're doing well and well intentioned but need to proceed logically in steps. Get a manual please. You can get an Evinrude service manual on CD at www.acmeoutboards.com for not much $$. To get the powerhead off, remove the top cover/cowl. Clamp the motor to a 2X4 securely, I like to clamp a 2X4 into my shop vise and put the motor on that. Tilt the lower end up and locate the bolts that hold the powerhead to the leg. After you find them soak them with some PB Blaster or Kroil penetrating oil, at least overnight. Remove the bolts slowly. As you remove the last one, tilt the motor back down, so it's straight up and down, like in your photos. Have a buddy help you lift the powerhead up a little and find the shift rod connector already mentioned. Disconnect the shift rod connector and lift the powerhead off, try to keep the driveshaft in the leg/lower unit. You may have to jiggle the powerhead a little to get the top of the driveshaft out of it. Set the powerhead on a bench and you can do the compression test. Remove both spark plugs for the test and make sure the wires are grounded, put a plug in the wire boot and rest the plug tip up against the powerhead, out of the way somewhere. Do the compression test, then tackle the impeller in the lower unit. Keep the driveshaft down in the gearcase when you are doing the impeller change. This all takes patience, but you've got time right? If it's too daunting, send me a PM...I'll ask a friend of mine in the MO Ozarks if he knows anyone close to you who can guide you along or help you out.

I think you'll also want to label and remove the hoses from the carb and manifold, otherwise your powerhead will be tethered to the base/leg. I find it best to label and replace the hoses as they are typically hard and dried out.

And I would suggest getting a manual for your motor, it will help you a lot now and in the future.

i guess after I check compression....which. I am not sure how to do...

hello,

u remove the spark plugs and install a compression guage. crank engine over till u get highest reading. if it has sat, be sure u do put some oil on bore first... very light coat, hand turn over engine a few times... then pull crank. should be over 100 psi on each hole. search net for compression guage to see what one looks like, etc.

nice pix! i guess a bit big, motor looks to be in good condition...

regards... and oh...

good luck!

If they are allan keys then they have been replaced. The original screws are standard slotted.

90 psi is LOTS for that motor. In fact, I don't have a single 7.5 hp with more than 90 psi. They will run fine down to 60 psi.

i was working on the motor and there was this little glass ball in the front of the motor near where the gas lines come into...that broke....how hard is that to come by? what is it called? i tried and tried to get that dang flywheel cover off and i think i am just gonna have to get a puller. i tried the screw driver trick...and it didn't budge. does anyone know if i can get that glass piece from NAPA?

That's called the filter bowl. Part number is 303121. Only available from a OMC/BRP parts dealer. Its worth $30.

You can get a harmonic balancer puller for under $30. Probably under $20.

where is everyone finding part numbers?

We have parts catalogs.

Do you mean the gasket between the powerhead and the exhaust tower? If so, the part number is 304314. It used to be a special order part, which makes it harder to find.

I've used the old gasket as a pattern to trace out the shape of the gasket on a sheet of felpro black 1/16 gasket material you can get at most auto parts stores. I use a single hole punch to punch the bolt holes and a pair of scissors and a razor blade to cut it out. You have to take your time and do it right, but it's worked for me numerous times. Saves shipping time/cash, too.
Good luck,

$150-200 is standard for a complete tune-up. However, it will be a great running motor the should last you another 50 years.

There are two screws a vent and a drain. Remove both and fill from the bottom until it comes out the top. Replace the vent screw on the top. Remove the pump and put the bottom screw back in. Those little pumps that fit on the oil bottle work best.

Fill it from the bottom screw hole until it comes out the top screw hole. It's full. Assumes the unit is vertical. Get yourself a quart bottle with a hand pump - much easier and neater than trying to use the squeezy tubes...

Yes, solid core. You can buy them at a small engine shop or online. I think 22" is a little short. I think you need more like 26", but that's a guess. You can trim them. You can also buy the wire by length and add the boots later. That's what I do.

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

ok anoyther proble..i replaced the coils...trimmed my old plug wires a little attached them to the new coils. I get no spark. I did not replace anything else under the flywheel...just coils. every thing looks good except the wires...is the something I can check to see if it is my wires? also I have cranked that flywheel as hard as I can and cannot get it completely on...it took every bit of strength and weight to get that flywheel off too. I should probably just get ignition tune up kit...and new wires and maybe that will solve it. could I have my coil wires on the wrong side?...i put the black on the coil side with 2 screws..the furthest point...then the green on the poinr opposit side with the condenser wire on that verticle prong...this is how it was show on that website with the 5hp repair in the website on page 2 of my thread. but mine originally had black on the side with one screw...then thw green the opposite post than I have it now. I figured probably didn't matter much
