Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

alright fellas as fred has told ya we got the thing running! the packing nuts needed to be tightened a little more so that no air got in. i still need to clean the jets on the top to make sure it is clear...and there has been some rubber o ring chunks going into the filter bowl...and then sucked up into the carb because i have to get a filter. once turkey season is over...i will take that carb apart..and get that thing super clean. i do have a video on the phone, but i have not been on the computer at home to take it off the phone.

Thank all of you for the help...i hope that i can pass on some knowledge of the motor to someone else. Special thanks to fred for taking the time...(several times) to let me bring it over and to help work on it...it is clear that this is his passion. anyone that will work on some stranger's motor...getting your arms all dirty and nasty...and even gave several parts to me that he had laying around. not only that...he was trusting enough to let me use his perfectly good caburator on my motor. i will get pics of the motor...the boat....and the video up asap!

THANKS AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU!

I promise I was not picking my nose at the end of that video. Probably wiping away a tear.

I really enjoyed this thread. That was particularly neat that a member made a "house call" to help someone put the final touches on an old motor. Your motor sounded great. Ol' Fred sounds like my kind of guy. I'd like to see a pic of his "stash" of old motors.
Later,

Understand too that all I did was tweak the motor a bit. He did all the hard work and good work too.

I'll bet a few dollars that after he gets over his "mad" about the hammer that he'll be wrenching on a 10, 15, or 18 in the future...:):)
Those '50's OMC's are fun to work on-- they're so simple and easy to get to the nuts and bolts and such.

My first was 1956 Fleetwin 7.5 hp. That was a lot of motors ago. Get a 10 hp next. You will be surprised of the power difference 2.5 hp can make.

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

yeah, i think before i get another motor...i will get a boat with a trailor...maybe a little 15ft flat bottom...but much wider...this one i have is not the most sturdy on the water...my next project is hooking up some wheels to my 12ft flat bottom. i plan to put them on a hinge...where i can fold them off to the side of the boat near the back seat...and...make some sure of quick locking mechanism so they stay straight up and down...but somehting i can reach from inside the boat....that way i can drag it easily to water...especially for those duck hunts....then put a handle on the front...that way i am just wheeling it to water..drop it in...that way it is easy to bring places...and i can avoid trying to put the motor on the back while in the water...i know i will drop that motor in the water sooner or later haha. then i can keep it on because it will not hit the ground....then just flip the weels up sitting on top of the boat. this summer i will made a duck blind out of grass and pvc :)

Looks like it pushes that boat pretty nice. I wish my 7.5 hp's pushed my boat as well.

Seems like a pretty narrow boat. No wonder he wants a wider one!

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

yeah...it is less than 36in wide...and 42 at the top. well, i went out turkey hunting...woke up late...got to the slew...couldn't get the boat started..ended up about 1/4 mile down the slew before i realized...i left my high speed adjuster too lean...so it started right up...so it is well after daylight...the water was super high...and i get to the island...IT IS COMPLETELY UNDER WATER!!!!!!...I thought that it might just be the edge...nope..so i'm sitting there boating down the trails you would normally walk on....i couldn't find any dry land....so didn't get any hunting in! it was soo deep...i couldn't touch my oar to the bottom...only at the very enterance was it shallow...and about 10 feet past...it was deeper than 4 ft...so needless to say it was not a great trip...on top of all that...when helplessly going toward the main river in the slew...i get the GREAT idea to try to row agains the current...so of course...i didn't get anywhere...so after all that was said and done...i get back to the truck...and i feel like throwing up...so i blasted my A/C on...and felt better...went home...got my jugs...and tried to go jugging...that didn't go so well...way way way too much wind...also......i put my motor in reverse...and it didn't catch the rod...i guess i had too much down pressure on it and lifted it up past it...and the motor almost came out of the water... i was barely able to push it back down and get the throttle down. my boat is soo light that the front end was way out of the water....so to make this set up work....i need to get an extension...and sit in the front, lol. part of me just wants to get rid of the boat. not as sturdy as i would like for what i am doing...it is great with someone in the front to weigh it down. it will probably be fine with just me in the front...

Yeah, you need a wider boat at least...if you plan on duck hunting out of it, it needs to be wide enough to be stable as a blind.

Good job, Dave.
I'm really impressed with what you have accomplished (especially considering your two jobs and pregnant wife :)).
See you on the water,
Brad

Nice job on the motor. It looks like it really pushes that boat pretty good, even with two people in it. I know that it is a small boat but see if you can make that rig work for you for a while. I kinda like the idea of a small boat that is transportable in the back of a truck. No trailer to liscence and maintain. As a matter of fact you started the thread about your boat about the time the city of Maplewood started hassling me about my 14 ft jon and trailer being in my driveway. One more less worry. Just throw it in the garage or under the deck out of the way. I bet O,fallon is just as bad as Maplewood about that. If you ever need someone to weight down the front end for you when you go jug fishing let me know. I am real good at that these days. LOL. We could even through my trolling motor on there if you don't have one

Brad...you're on buddy, i'll smoke ya once i get about a 3 ft extension...so that i can sit on the front bench of the boat...that way i can weigh it down. wider would be cool, but it is nice not having to worry about all that stuff with license and insurance. haha we all need a Fred lol. well, i must say jugging is tough to do when you have one guy :). i still need to work on my idling...it pretty much shuts off at low idle...those jets need to be cleaned out. i'll do that before i put the cover back on..i think that i can rig a blind on there just fine...i am not sure that it will be still enough though. definately can't stand up in it with ease. well, hope this thread helps someone down the road....or should i say river....okay, i know that was cheezy, but it was all i could come up with on such short notice. Well, thanks again to all of, ya, i am sure i will be posting more later on how the boat is doing.
