Hi Everyone,

Just got the marine service inspection report on a boat I am considering.

Its a 1993 Sunbird with a 115 Evinrude.

Compression - 150 - 145 - 145 - 145

Lower Unit: OK, holds pressure

Spark: OK

Hard Start - Needs carbs rebuilt

Needs impeller - stream weak.

Steering stiff: Suggests first cleaning/greasing the steering rods/connection to the motor. Tech said this usually takes care of the tight steering.

Other odds/ends I can handle myself.

Here is the estimate:

Carbs - about 400.00
Steering - Labor only, about 150.00
Water Pump - about 125.00

Is this reasonable? I would like to learn to do this myself, however I just don't have the time for it right now. In the future, I would take it on.

The boat is 3000.00, not sure if he will negotiate.

Thanks for any advice.

his estimate sounds inline. don't know about the price of the boat, depends on condition.

If you were confidant enough the carbs are really easy to rebuild. The kits are about 20 bucks per carb, the impeller kit maybe 40 bucks..
If this is a dealer selling it they should do the carbs and impeller as part of the deal in my opinion..

I don't think that the respondents may know that the Sunbird is an in inboard jet boat. This forum is for outboards.

Not buying from a dealer, this boat is being sold private.

The marine service is from a local independant shop.

Since this would be a new (used) boat, I would like to have everything done professionally to get to a starting point, from then on, I will take on the work.

In addition, the next few weeks are really busy at work for me.

What do you think of the estimate? The tech is suggesting 4-5 hours labor for the carb rebuild, is this how long it takes? If it was me learning the first time, you could triple that time to do it.

Thats a fair amount of hours for the carbs. Looks like its a crawl in the bilge to work on boat.
I would let them do it...
Its like a big Jet Ski!...LOL!

Is the boat a Sunbird Fish and Ski - the 115 outboard? Or is it the Sunbird 115 Turbojet?

Sunbird's were not jet boats.

Not sure what that picture is of.

This boat is a 17 foor Corsair bowrider with a 115 Evinrude.

Hard Start - Needs carbs rebuilt

hello,

hard start by who's opinion?

seller's?, your's? or inspect shop?

have u been out in the boat? did it start hard, but run fine otherwise? hard start every time? or just when cold?

sometime merely a fresh fuel pump and/or a set of fresh plugs will solve hard starting characteristics. as will, proper starting proceduers.

of course, an engine should fire right up, so only thing to do is to ID culprit causing hard start. would hate to think is was just a...

loose or cracked hose. ;)

regards,

lakester

Here is what I am looking at. It is a 1993 Sunbird with an outboard. I was not aware that they ever made jet boats, never scene one before.

The mechanic said it was a hard start, said after running it, the carbs needed to be cleaned out/rebuilt. The boat sat for 3 years.

This is not the actual boat, just another like it for sale in Florida.
