This is my first attempt at cracking anything open in an outboard.
This unit is a 1977 35 HP Evinrude that I got which has a broken shifter lever (sheared off at case).

First let me say this work is definitely over my head...to prove it see the following pic...lol

Outboard Work is Over My Head

While I have this opened up I was wondering if there is anything else I should do besides replacing the gasket?

I am really just unbolting things and playing it be ear since I have never attempted anything like this before so if there are going to be any tricks or you have any tips for when I get ready to put it back together tomorrow please let me know. Not sure why but the manual I have doesn't have any area that talks about taking this mid section apart or putting it back together.

And man could they have put one of the the power head nuts in a harder place to get at...the one next to the starter was not fun and I had to remove starter and throttle linkage bar but not sure how I will get it started again.

Is this grommet / bushing bad or will it cause problems?
I see a hole in it but maybe it's supposed to be there.

The gasket I will replace (taken from under unit looking up).

I find this is a good time to clean & paint both the pwrhead & inside the pan, if hoses are old now is the time to change them, you will most likely need to drop the lower to line things back up so do the impeller as well if it is more than a cpl years old.

Thank you for the reply...when you say I will most likely need to drop the lower unit to reassemble it that just because lining up the drive shaft and exhaust tubes are easier from below? This is my first time working on an outboard so was trying to "not" have to drop the lower unit...lol But I am sure I will need to at some point.

You don't have to drop the lower unit to put the p/h back on. Just be careful and rotate the flywheel to line up the c/s splines and be sure to lube the sides of the d/s and use the proper sealer on the p/h gasket.

Lube the sides of the drive shaft? or the splines? and what type of lube?
Also I thought the power head gasket went on dry? Pretty sure that's what the dealer told me when he sold it to me but I could be wrong and they aren't open on weekends...errr. Does it need a sealer as well?

i just use a good quality grease on the splines....none on top of the ds. i do use a spray on gasket sealer on the base gasket, just because it gets sticky and will hold the gasket in place while you line the powerhead back up with the bolt holes. the sealer is not really needed if everything is cleaned up perfectly, but it will save some grief.

Ok thanks...guess I will go see if I can get this thing back together now....ugh..lol

And do you know what the aluminum box thing is called that I had to unbolt to change the gasket? (pictured above with grommet on it)

Sure there is a name for it other than metal box thing...lol

I meant to say c/s splines not d/s. If the gasket says, " use no sealer", don't. If not, put omc gasket sealing compond on it or permatex # 3.

Was just reading up on the "tail tell" stuff and it seems that not all motors have them, would still like info on this but I may be outta luck...I doubt this is one but since I don't know what it is for and can't tell from the parts diagram I thought I would ask.

What's this hose for?
