Re: K&N Oil Filter

Man, I wish the biggest thing I had to worry about was the details of my oil filter.
I by the cheapest thing on the shelf which always has a name brand on it.
I change the oil and filter often. It never has a chance to get clogged.

Re: K&N Oil Filter

Maybe I can shed some light on this reoccuring question. (We shall see.)

Oil filter "Name Brands" are almost meaningless as there are only a handful of manufactures. They are simply re-branded with the retail name.

Here is a bit of a breakdown on who makes what.

Honeywell - Sells as Fram Extra Guard, Fram Tough Guard, Fram Double Guard, Fram High Mileage, Pennzoil, Quaker State.

Baldwin/Hasting - Sells as Baldwin/Hastings.

Champion Labs - Sells as Bosch, Car and Driver, Champ, Deutsch, AC Delco, K&N, Mobile 1, and STP.

Wix (Dana) - Sells as Carquest, NAPA, WIX.

Purolator - Sells as Bosch, Motorcraft, PowerFlo, ProLine, Purolator Premium Plus, Purolator Pure One, Quaker State, Sierra.

Which is "best"? Man thats tough because someone is going to jump up and argue with anything said but, according to the SAE testing (Designation J1858) done in 2008 the best (over all testing of various sizes and configurations) flow rates with the best filtration is made by, are you ready? Wix.

Wix also has a better design (patented) on the pressure relief valve and anti-flowback valve. (They are the only automotive filter maker using a metal coiled spring.)

Sure you can spend lots more money on a "name brand" if you like, but as stated above you are paying for the name.

folks he said it all right here, all ya gatta do is listen!!!
i've done my research also and that's all i run, any filter.
you think your boat is going to get anymore of a work out than a diesel truck pulling 15k up a hill?
wifes car, boat and truck on wix.
you see deadheaders out there with 1/2 mil. miles on their trucks and still going strong running wix.
pretty sure honywell/pennzoil makes the filters for mercury.
do you really think mercury makes there own?
why go to napa and pay more for a wix with their brand name on it?
autozone's and o'reilly's everywere, make's it easy.
however i learned in business class many years ago this.
people buy what they want not what they need.
have a good one.

Amen to that Alumi Numb.......

which grade bubba, Napa has at least two grades of filters.

It used to be gold and silver...... now i believe its "nascar select"..... or some crap like that... or silver. (I do use the napa "nascar" ones nowadays, but I buy the filters at close to cost.... because the Napa owner is a friend of mine and I do work on his Chapperall)
Either way.... an oil change on a boat (in my charge to a customer) starts at about 50 bucks and goes up from that. I've had people ask... but I really haven't had anybody sqwack about the difference between a 4 dollar filter and an 8 dollar filter.
Its a difference of 4 bucks.... if you can't afford 4 bucks then you shouldn't own a boat.
Use what ever makes you feel better about yourself and your boat.... but all i'll ask is not to use the bottom of the crap pile out of the crap that's out there on the market.

I can afford my boat only because I DON'T pay for someone to change my oil, or do maintainence, winterizing, storage, ect. ect. I don't pay double for something that says NASCAR on it.
We don't eat out at expensive restraunts, keep the T-stat at 62*W and 75*S, Don't have a big plasma TV, no cell phone, no car payments (never owned a new car) I could go on and on, I learned how to budget my hard earned years ago.
But don't tell me what I can and can't afford.
Oh and if your going to work on your buddys chaparral at least learn how to spell it. ##^$^

I agree with that for the most part. People always snap when you say something about not being able to afford to get something done and they say, "I cant believe people own a big boat and cant afford to get it worked on!"

Thats the main reason we can have a boat like we do, we do all of our own work! We dont pay someone to clean it, do maintenance on the engines, etc..

I cant comment on the part about Big TV's and new cars... :D
