Kicker motor mount placement

Looking to mount my kicker motor mount on my 88 Crestliner 3.7 I/O. The mount I bought is heavy duty with 2 down positions. I am planning on using about a 9.9hp but have not purchased the motor yet. I was told by a good friend (Elderly boat mechanic) that most of the older small outboards were long shafts ( most likely what I will end up with).
He said mount the kicker plate so that when it is in the down position, the measurement between the top of the mount, (where the motor will sit) and the bottom of the hull should be 19 inches. Should this be the measurement in the second to lowest position, and the lowest position be used for a short shaft motor? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Kicker motor mount placement

U P - Personally I would wait until you get a kicker before mounting the bracket. That way you can set it for the best fit, also account for spacing for a steering bracket attachment for it(don't know the actual name). Then you can steer from the helm.

A short shaft kicker mat be a better fit with your bracket, the motor will get out of the water when not using it.

I mounted mine so the skeg was above the bottom of the hull when in the raised position. This keeps the kicker prop out of the water when up on plane.
