This should be a Stupid HumanTrick!
I was checking into my hotel and while getting my luggage out i set my laptop case next to the passenger door.My cell phone rings so i answer and forgot about the laptop.I go around to get something out to write on then sit in the drivers seat.I realize my car hauler trailer is sticking out in the driveway a bit so i start up and pull forward about 2 feet.
CRUNCH!!! OMFG!!! I ran over my Dell!!!
I get it out of the case and it looks like just a dent in the corner....i thought well it may still work.
I powered it up and realized the LCD was cracked from the inside..I only see half a screen.
I need a PC for work and am going to be on the road the next few weeks so off to shopping i went.
Went everywhere looking for a deal on a machine with XP on it.No luck,Vista only except for Walmart who wanted 700 bucks for a cheap computer.
Ended up buying at CircuitCity...Not a great deal but had to have one.

Yep, one of those DOH!! moments.:%
Now i'm getting used to vista.
Bought a Toshiba. 100 gig hard drive,1 gig ram,intel Duo core1.60,Dvd Burner,Vista Premium.
God! Vista nags you with security alerts.I'll be glad when a service pack is released.
It is much faster than the Celeron M in my old machine...
Now i have been sitting here uninstalling all the bull crap they put on new ones now.
I'm going to call Dell to see how much to replace the monitor on the old one..At least i could have a backup..

u can buy a portable drive that u can plug in your dell hard drive

u will need to pull the hard drive out first

the Toshiba is great, it is the same as HP, just under a different name

YOu can buy replacement LCD inserts and then solder the connection.... so I've heard. Never have done it though.

my friend who is a comp guru helped me buy my HP. when i got it he loved it, he did his research and got a Toshiba. well of course he wanted to open his up, which he did. all the parts in there have HP numbers on them and say replace with HP parts. he called me and laughed

Uhhh...no. Not even close. HP and Toshiba have nothing to do with each other. HP doesn't even make any of the parts in an HP branded computer.

Furthermore, Toshibas have a terrible, horrible, terrible, terrible reputation. Ask on any computer forum and 15 people will tell you why with first hand experience. Did I say terrible?

I'll tell you why I asked - when my son went to college (in 2003) I bought him a "holy cow, gee whizz, wow" top of the line Toshiba portable. Cost me a fortune.
The hard drive took a dump 34 days past warranty, one of the speakers fell out, the top snapped off and what really pi$$ed me off was the charger/power supply cord
burst into flames at the connection from the converter to the PC. Toshiba said "well, we recommend you replace the power cord/charger every year", "well how much is it" I asked. "Only $ 125.00" .
Guess what - he is now the proud owner of a new Sony
VAIO. Toshiba SUCKS!!!

I looked at the Sony but thought they were way over priced.
I guess i have the 14 day refund policy on this Toshiba..
I can tell the case is not as sturdy as the Dell was and I think the display is not as good.I went back to Circuit City and exchanged the first one because of the way the text looked on the display..kind of blurred to me.
This second one looks the same so i guess its just the way its made.
OOHHH!! What to do?

Take it back. 6 months from now you'll really wish you did.

The Dell probably wouldn't be that hard to fix with ebay parts if it still boots....(try hooking it to an external monitor)

I'll be shopping ebay for parts.
I'm just not happy with this PC..
I will probably have to raise hell with CircuitCity to get a refund...
Old PC boots fine,just can't see but about 1/3 of the display..
i thought about just exchanging for a HP but have been reading some bad reviews on them also.

That's what I got after I took my Toshiba back for the 4th time...only kept it about 8 months before I sold it and got a Dell. The overall quality with Dell was SOOOOO much better...

Are you sure you arent thinking of Compaq? Which is made by HP, and isnt a secret....

well,CircuitCity were A-holes. Would not give me a total refund.The last Toshiba would freeze up on shut down.
They still wanted to charge me 125 bucks re-stocking fee..for a defective product? I was highly pissed!!
I did get the sales manager to work with me a little.
He knocked a 100 bucks off the price of a HP and give me a hundred dollar rebate to mail off...
So i now have a HP with the Centrino Duo core 1.7ghz
2 gigs of ram Vista premium,built in web cam,remote control,ect,ect....
It does look and feel like its much better built than the Toshiba. Display is better also.
Not a Dell but will have to live with it.
Found out my brother can now buy Dell stuff thru his work for about 1/3 off retail...Thats why i was trying to get a refund..
Guess i'll keep the HP for about a year then go the Dell route..:'(

Surprised you had so many problems with the Toshibas. I've got a few customers who have them and they're built a lot sturdier than my Acer (then again most are). I haven't heard anything bad about them until now. I will keep that in mind when people ask me about them.

I'm no big fan of the HP/Compaq Presario line but the business class HP notebooks are actually pretty dang nice. Sorry for your troubles.
