Our company website's blog was receiving spam posts. Although only a few odd posts made their way onto our blog, our email spam filter was catching about 1,000 spam emails per hour. We were told by our website design firm that it was a "Spambot". Our web hosting company is going to put up some more sophisticated filtering "stuff" to protect our website (email is a different animal; that's the IT group's issue).

Is there any way to tell what the original source of this particular Spambot was?

Re: know what a Spambot is?

Its not impossible to track down the IP address of the spambot, but it can be difficult. Most spammers use proxy servers to hide their true identity. The proxy server owners often won't give out info on who their clients are, unless there is a court order compelling them to do so.

BTW, some folks theorize that the many of the folks who sell ad blockers, firewalls, etc., are actually the ones generating a lot of the spam. I don't know how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that there is at least some truth to it.

You just have to filter it unless they can track down the master bot and shut it down. Master bot doesn't send the spams but rather send instruction to the network of bots, infected computer worldwide, that are actually sending the spams. The master can resides on any web hosting server. It could be just a simple website.

Those companies need a market for their products. I wouldn't be suprised if they are creating the market for their products. ;)

They hardly need to. People make money sending "spam" which is why they continue to do it. And they get more clever with it all the time, figuring out ways to get past filters, etc.
