So I did a complete seal replacement on my 1968 65hp manual shift Johnson, Prop shaft, drive shaft and the middle o-ring seal. I used every seal that came in my I-boats seal kit. And I'm still leaking. I have replaced the nylon washers on the drain/ fill screws also. I'm confused anyone with any ideas.

While she is running I can see oil coming out from underneath the cavitation plate. the slot there that they suck water up from and when I drop the lower I have milky oil all over the inside lower unit leg, making me think its a drive shaft seal problem. I'm stumped and looking for someone to bounce some ideas off of.

Thanks a ton.

Sounds to me like you are barking up the wrong tree. Chances are over 90% that you aren't looking at gear oil at all. That is the oil that you put in the gas and it has gone through the engine and has done its job. It is then discharged out the exhaust to worry you to death. So don't worry, it is normal.

However if you are actually getting water into the gearcase, either you didn't get all the seals or you didn't do it right. You did replace the shift rod seal, right?

... or one of the rotating shafts (prop, drive) were grooved and the new seal landed in the same place as the old one. If any grooving is noted, new seal needs to land in a slightly different spot.

FR I was hoping you would chime in on this and give me your insight I do really appreciate it. I have been thinking the shift rod seal is the possible culprit, I did not receive a seal in my kit for that. So there definitely needs to be a seal on that rod where it enters the lower???? That is going to be my problem. I need to find the seal for that. There is not one there and I did not receive a seal for it I believe...??? I know I'm getting water intrusion into my lower for sure my brand new oil keeps coming out VERY milky.

And yes when placing the drive shaft seal I did make sure to seat it on a new area and not the groove.

I guess I will have to find out what I need to seal that shift rod and get that in place. I'm not finding a seal listed on my schematic for the shift rod though???

I think that seal is part of the complete water pump kit.

Re: L/U still leaking after seal replacement

Ok so I found my shift rod seals, and will be ordering them. Do I need to order the shift rod bushing, the shift rod o-ring, and the shift rod gasket?? Or is the bushing not necessary??

I'm reading there is some difficulty in getting the old bushing out is this something someone has any tips on??? And is the shift shaft seals replaced from the water pump side the top or removed and replaced from the bottom side?
