Has anyone thought about installing EFI? There are several kits available.

Re: L6 250/292 ?

Just as a point of information, many years ago I had an 81' Caddy Eldorado with a O.E. 4.3 Buick designed V6 with a standard computerized Rochester Quadrajet 4bbl.carb. It was a good combo, delivering a peppy ride, with good power, & economy, in this lighter chassis, in fact better then the O.E. Caddy 350V8, although the car gave me fits with electrical problems. Apparently GM in their infinite wisdom decided the carb was too big for the motor, so they put a governer on it to only allow the secondaries to open a certain amount, not fully. I have no idea if they did anything with the jetting, but it was my wife's car at the time so I didn't bother to mess with it, except replace a bad sensor in the body of the carb.

One more item, the 305 Chevy V8, is a smaller bore version (3.5" I think) of the Chevy 350 V8, using the same 3.48" stroke crank, and uses smaller valve heads (non Vortec, early design's), because of this, for it's size it is a long stoke motor, and delivers better fuel economy, and a bit less power then the 350. In fact, IMO it's a toss up that it might give better economy then the 4.3 (262") V6 due to the V6's large 4" bore, and that same 3.48" stroke crank. It's a proven fact, long stroke motors produce better torque, & milage, then comparable design's.

Thanks Mike, I read that in a few places here on the web too. Thats what i'm hoping for if I use the correct carb. and tune it properly. Still I/we wonder why merc. only used it once in 69? Quite a deversified subject, it will be interesting to see.:D

The 292 was an excellent Chevy truck motor but the god awful long stroke and non-counterbalanced crankshaft is not a recipe for sustained high rpm operation. Hence the one-year tenure and when the 305/307's were close to that displacement, the V8 was probably in more demand.

3000-4000 rpms most of the time doesn't sound to awful high to be running it in a boat does it? With Max 4300 rpms?

Stop picking on my Stovebolts! There are some nice L6s out there still running with less issues than alot of the new junks! haha! There's a mercruiser L6 292 on ebay right now that has a holley 4brl for 900.00 but it's about 700 miles away. Atleast this 292 has the mounting ear/tab to recieve the merc front eng. mount, unlike the 250 i have. Thats a plus! Well I don't know  I'm going to run the 250 this coming season anyway and prob rebuild the 292 for next yr. It will be fun to try and see the difference, who knows i might go back to a 250 or do up the 292 for the SS 235 i'm looking at with the outdated obsolete OMC - V8 in it. Thanks for the input and i got my answer: 200hp w/4brl carb.
No, he was wrong...it has most likely the original quadrajet on it ( I bought the engine). I'm a big fan of the carter afb design, but we'll see how it runs once I get it in the boat.

Re: L6 250/292 ?

the merc manual specs say that the 250 L6 was 160hp with a 1brl carb. then it says the 250 was 165hp with a 2brl carb. I just picked up a 292 and the manual says the 292 was 200hp. Now, is that with a 1brl,2brl or 4brl carb? It doesn't specify that so i'm curious what it would be with my 2brl carb? anyone? thanks

I was just wondering where the L6 designation came from.
Speaking automotive The Straight 6 was an I6 (inline 6)
An L6 would be An Lhead or flathead 6.Then of course there was The willys F head Which had Overhead valve intake and in block Flat head exhaust and their slide valve engine and Pierce Arrows T head.Blah,Blah,Blah.

The "L6" is a shortened version of how Mercruiser describe the engine in their parts catalog.... Full designation is "I/L6"... see the screen grab below...

When I owned a boat shop it was distributed by Mercury to all the dealers.... In place of the old microfiche cards...

And No, you can't have a copy.... sorry, breach of copyright if I do....
