Re: lake mead info

was thinking along the same lines QC ,about scoping out the beach with the deck boat to pull in for the night.as for bugs :(,what kinds of nasty little critters should we expect, are we able to sleep on deck under the stars or will we be the luau buffet.?

SCORPIONS.....

They don't really like to swim........but, you never really know!
Had a couple on my boat when I got home....probably brought on by us!
Loading in & out!!!!!!

Just a thought...

SHAKE EVERYTHING OUT BEFORE YOU BRING IT ABOARD!!!!!!!
And have fun of course, just be safe.

Re: lake mead info

We've never really had bug issues except on a beach where there is a muddy wash in the end . . . stagnant stuff. Gnats seem to hit on specific days, but I don't recall them in July.

I have never heard of any theft issues, but I have thought about it before too. One thing is that there really is no way for someone to know when you'll be back. Unless they were nearby and watched you leave they wouldn't know if you were returning in 5 minutes or 5 hours . . .

Also, if you are in a remote spot, they'd have to be scumbags who steal stuff, who have a reasonably nice boat, and be willing to spend $120 in fuel to find you . . . Doesn't seem like a likely combo to me ;)

Oh and next to none of these beaches is accesible by land.

Oh, oh . . . we require a complete, detailed report with lots of pics!!!! Have a great time and be safe. Make sure your stakes and asscoiated tie downs are 10 times as good as you think they need to be!!!!! Pay attention to the lake level. Not projected to go down much during your stay, but you do not want to get the Houseboat stuck . . .

Lake Mead water level stuff

yes... when in Bryce do the hike into the canyon that takes you to Queens Castle and when in Zion do the Narrows (rent the shoes and pole, it helps a lot). these two hikes will never leave you long after you return.

Re: lake mead info

travaler, when you moor the house boat try to find a cove protected from south winds, seen too many house boats washed up on the north shore... (hope this wasn't mentioned before  )

I agree with QC on the non-theft issue, as long as you're not close to road access. I never feel threatened at the lake, but I like to get away from the crowds.

Fishing... I can't beleive I forgot this, you need to have a few top water lures, 1 1/2-3" chugger type,,, maybe even a Kastmaster to drop down. Stripers have been "boiling" lately and this is top water fishing at it's best. If you see a big commotion on the water (maybe a tiny one too), it's the stripers chasing shad. Carp slurp at the surface and roam in huge packs, so don't get buck fever by slurping action on the surface, you're looking for aggressive behavior. I hope you can get into a few boils, it's the most fun I've had fishing for small stripers... (FYI, big stripers hang below the small stripers in a boil)

Have a great time out there!

Re: lake mead info

back from our adventure on lake mead .
first thing to say is WE HAD AN AWSOME TIME!!!!!!!!!!! and yes it is HOT! but jump in the water and your instantly refreshed and cool till you dry off . we started our trip out of callville .sat morn, pilot took us out ,then we were on our own . decided to head for temple bar area first. started looking for a place to beach about a mile shy of the marina on s.side . took d/b in to scout ,found a nice dry wash and forgot about the mud factor .wife jumped off onto dry land ,OOPS,UP TO HER ARMS IN MUD . after she commando style crawled her way to open water she got back on the boat , very hot and bothered ! we then found a nice beachy area and commenced to attempting our first d-day landing . landing went well, now to secure h/boat .my co-pilot and his wife stormed the beach for this ,after studying the ref pics and some discusion ,lots of cursing and head scratching ,we occupied the beach -sunburned heat stroked ,dizzy tired and v v v v thirsty AND HOT!!!!!. i dont know how my wife and i would would have done it without our friends (quite a task for newbies).its now beer thirty for the troops !!!(WELL DESERVED)!after a meal and some drinks we witnessed a most beautifull sunset.we were relaxed untill the winnd started picking up . our site was a little more exposed to the open water then i would have liked so i was constently worried that the h/b would break free and crush the d/b and all woud sink .it didnt thuogh.they just put that fear in you at the marina ,and how much engines cost that arnt covered by insurance. after a fitfull nights sleep i awoke to a beautiful sunrise, coffee and a well secrued h/b.today we explore (and get more ice) ,and yes ,we decided to keep the gen. running for a/c. FRIGGINHOT!!!! :D all for now ,will continue adventure story tomm. night or next .for now here is a link to my snapfish photo site for some pics (im the one with the hat )

Re: lake mead info

THE MORNING AFTER
I was def. pround of myself and crew after accomplishing the fist beaching ---what i have learned for any newbies looking to house boat. (you can do it )but you will need someone to stay on boat once its beached to keep it steady ,especially if its windy, and it ussually it is,they WILL need to know how keep it in place while someone goes ashore to pound the 4-4ft stakes in.it takes a bit of hard work with aan 8pound sledge hammer.heat is a biiiiiig!!!!!!!! factor, wears you out,BUT REMMEMBER THIS-take your time, the person at the helm can hold the boat in place for as long as you need to secure it.the ropes wont snap either, but the stakes can pull.make sure there in good! SOOOO-with our now we can doit attitudes we set off exploring.we head for greggs basin, after going through the narrows we went straight and into along quietcove that ended at a dry riverwash ,beautiful place ,saw eagle waatching us enter and buzzards waiting at the end. we then set out for the top of basin, went as far as sandy point ( marina recommended not to go further and by the lack of civilization we were ok with that )very deserted out there. unsettling at times to realize to get help is a ship to shore radio ,and help will take awile to get to you ,.i was amazed that we had cell sevice in so many areas.daughter was up on that wereas there was a boyfreind at home . way back found an awsme campite at mile marker 38.on way back to h/b we noticed others scoping sites so the chase is on.packed up and took off quick .onother h/b was ahead ,thought it was gonna steal our newly claimed site:eek:how dare they, but we made it:p.absolutly perfect place .storming the beach was still a bit of a chore, wind was pushing as i was turning into position so it took a few tries . tying up went well and all was good.made a bbq pit and had steak and taters with sweet baby rays sauce, mmmmm mmmmm good. oooooh, and beer!:D. stars that night were incredible ,NEVER saw the milky way that clear ,and even saw a galixy with the telescope. and jay didnt have to burn his shorts ,we found wood ,sat around and cooked dogs over the open fire.oooh ,and beer:D.it was about now that we realized that the flyswatter is the most used tool on the boat.wife was becomming a proficient killing machine with the nasty littie device.in the morning the draggon flies came for a feast of flies ,ammazing the numbers of them.only did a little fishing of the back with some leftover steak ,it worked :,catfish love steak ,or sweet baby rays .spent a couple of nights there ,hiked after sundown and swam during day.FRIGGIN HOT!!!:).wanted to spend annother night but needed to gas up, gens been running for a/c .FRIGGIN HOT!!!:D. temple marina was much more freindly then calleville .probly from being less bussy .the toilets were a little smelly also ,so they checked them out .seals were gone .gave us some deodorizers to get us by .spend next two nightsback at boulder at sandy cove .
i will post those nights later this week.
hopefuly some of this info will help some future h/boaters .

Travaler18,

You should try it in Oct/Nov.
The camp fires aren't just for looks. :D
AND it's a whole lot cheaper.
Just bring a jacket for the evenings.

Oh.....here I go again, lettin' the ball out.
Thanksgiving is a PERFECT time for this.....
That is...Turkey, deep fried, OH, I really need to shut up.

Anyways, glad you had a great time.....when it was hot.
I'll do it in late fall or real early spring!;)

Re: lake mead info

qc- what do you mean by last shot?
I went to your picture link. The last picture (last shot) there was in a cove that I can't name from the angle of the picture. Either that or I have never been in there which would be weird, so I wanted to know where it was so I could beat Pierutrus there on Thanksgiving . . . :p :D

We usually go to Havasu for Thanksgiving as that is where the in-laws are, but I am gonna do a Turkey at Mead someday. Great deals for sure and you can get some beautiful days and nights and it is not too cold for sure. This picture is Thanksgiving day at Havasu two years ago . . .

Re: lake mead info

well ,you guys will have to get there early on thanksgiving cause i think it might get busy. that last shot was sandy cove ,10 minutes from calleville.when we got there it had a lot of day trippers on the other side of that little jetty ,only one boat by us .it was mid week so i think that kept the crowds down, otherwise i suspect that is a very popular spot;).was a great sandy beach but i liked our previous site better.we spent last two night there and explored boulder basin.by this time we were pros at the beach assault ,especially since it was a wide open area.went to the dam ,that was cool to see it from lake side.the best was the little inlet next to it with the walls straight up.went in an tied up to the shady side (just enough to cover the boat)ate lunch and swam .the water was a lot cooler there, very refreshing.buzzed up the coast past boulder beach towards calleville, found a neat little channel about 20ft wide that went about 300yards in ,hundreds of nesting birds al over the walls.stopped at calleville for supplies and more ice of course.learned there was a death on the lake ,someone was run over by a jet ski and i believe the jet skiers took off .the rangers were calling on the radio for any witnesses.i was surprised that theres no policing the lake, here in NH we have fish and game dept.. they are very present everywhere in NH .saw a scary site ,driver pulling 4 tubers ,NOOOO spotters .
all in all we all had an awsome time --the lake was absolutly magnifisent ,especially the narrows ,the mountians and scenary were breathtaking ,the temples awe inspiring , treking up the hills at dusk and overlooking the campsite and seeing all the old campfire rings every 20ft you climbed from years gone by made you feel like archiologists .it was just so dif from where were from, but dont get me wrong ,i love NH ,JUST LOVE EXPLORING ELSEWARE .dif scenery now and then.
we also spent a week at bryce ,zion, and all around s utah .1400 miles in a yukon in a week.thats a story for another day (if anyone is interested in my ramblings) .oh ,and vegas was ok,lost less then i planned:cool:.
thanks again for all the info and insights on lake mead from all of you .it really did make a differance having an idea of what to expect pretrip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!if any of you folks are comming to the new england area just holler for any info you need and ill tell all i know.e-mail is (cmd18inla@yahoo.com)if you cant find me here.gotta go get to bed now ,wasnt planning on posting tonight but i do enjoy reliving the trip but i dont type fast so its late for me
