Re: Large Wake

Just reread all my posts. I can't believe I left out the fact that is indeed a Chrysler Marine 440. Doh!!!! Anyway, I will adjust RPM down to 700 and see what that does. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until spring to do so as I just put it bed for the winter last weekend.

smclear; i found a pic of our wake and in all the other excitement did you get a chance to look at it? if you did is this any where close to yours?

45auto; i was just guessing that it was aq gm motor. at the time he said he had a big block. i was surprised when it was a 440 because if it wasnt a gm i thought it would be a 460. i knew what my 454 was and had the mercruiser manual and looked up what their specks on the VT were

Figured you were guessing Jaxnjil, but I was assuming a 454 too (like you, looked up specs on 1974 MIE 330 and 340) until Smclear mentioned 440. Figured it was the Chrysler then unless he had mis-typed 340.

How fast does that little boat go with that 44o in it, Smclear?

I hits 45 (GPS) at 4,400 RPM. Not terribly fast, but that's not what I bought it for. It has so much torque and pull it's incredible. So far I've pulled 4 skiers, all 45+, overweight, out-of-shape guys on slalom, without the boat even noticing they were there. Next season I'm going to try increasing the # of skiers up until the boat struggles. That is after I adjust the idle:).

A bit of personal trivia, I have to put this out there. My first New car was a 69' Dodge Charger R/T 440/375hp 4bbl Auto, because it was classier then a 69' Chevelle SS396, and that 440 was Sweet! ;) By the way, it was also a similar green

Re: Large Wake

this is a link to the wake we leave. its in the no wake zone in horseshoe canyon on flaming gorge.

jaxnjil - What kind of prop are you running? I have this exact same problem with a larger than "usual" wake on my 1989 SeaRay 220DA, which from your picture looks just like mine (aside from color). I've got the 5.7 though. This has been my only complaint on this boat.

smclear - I feel your pain, I go through a narrow channel and put out what I think is too much wake when my boat is just barely in gear. I posted a similar question to this on the prop section and the response that I got was that it has to do with the displacement of the boat (ie hull design). Although my wake is "big" at idle, its nothing close to yours.

Re: Large Wake

begester; that was a 15x19 mirage II with vents pluged and trim tabs down.
gps speed 3.5 to 4 mph. the lake was glassed off. it dosnt show up in the pix but we have more trouble with wig wag than any thing else
i have our boat tuned and am able to set and run my idle at 580 rmp. this is set with a photo tack. if i need more idle speed to warm up or keep alternator amps up, its easy to bump the throttle up a little

Re: Large Wake

Was it ever stated in this thread what engine is in the boat? Is it a GM or a Chrysler? I see Jaxnjil referenced a MIE 340 (GM 454) but then Smclear later says a "440 marine engine". Is it a Chrysler M-440?

Either way, the idle is way too high. Mercruiser specifies 650-700 RPM in gear for the 1974 big block inboards. Chrysler just says 700 RPM.

When adjusting the idle, boat needs to be in the water and in gear. 200 RPM will make a substantial difference.

Re: Large Wake

mmmm I love Century's.

Green isn't my favorite color, but that is a great boat.

I think the wake is typical for the hull shape and drive system. In my experience it often requires to go into and out of gear as you make your way down the channel.

Don't change your set up. It is correct for the boat.

I also have a 1969 Resorter and that what I do at idle is go in and out of gear 390 ford Crusader big block

Smoke, many people find a forum thread by a search engine matching terms they were searching for. Many times they may not realize how old a post is that was found this way, just that it's relevant to what they were searching.

yep which was exactly why I figured I'd clue him in .... we all do it from time to time but at least this way we won't all spend a week hashing tins out just to realize it's a year old outdated topic
