Hi Gang,

I'm making progress on this thing! 1992 Four Winns Horizon OMC5.0L

I noticed red fluid in the bilge after last outing, after some quick detective work, I noticed the output valve on the P/S reservoir was loose. (now tightened)

Should I be lining that plug with silicone tape?
Is there an O-ring on that connection that I should probably replace? (the connector seems dry now but it hasn't been under load again)

Also:

The belt(s) were very squeaky.. The flywheels are a little rusty too.. is this a major repair to undertake if I decide to take those off and clean em up?
The belt only stopped squeaking after the engine had really warmed up and I had given it quite a bit of throttle.

Nope,.... It's probably a flare fittin',.... possibly o-ring, but if it don't leak now,........

Ya mean Pulleys,..??..??

If so, sand 'em, 'n paint 'em with good enamel paint to get rid of the rust,...
Rust will chew up belts, really Fast,....

The only 1 that comes off, Easy, is the circulatin' water pump,....
Alternators, 'n P/S are pressed on,...

I carry a bar of Lava hand soap in my toolboxes,....
Not to wash my hands, but to dress belts with,....
Rubbin' the bar on a runnin' belt can often get ya one more lap,...

The alternator was probably workin' hard rechargin' the battery, hence some of the squealin',....

Thanks Bondo

Yes ..pulley

There is some visible rust on the pulleys and hence some of that is on the belts.

I will try to find that procedure and grab some new belts. Are these belts stocked at marine's or is a special order due to the vintage of the boat

Thanks again Bondo.. the Seloc repair manual says to not use auto parts belts.. not the right material?...

I suppose taking the belts off and taking them to an auto parts place is not to difficult to do.

Being that the bold is more than 20+ yrs old, it give me caution that I'll find anything retail to do the job.

I'll give it a shot. - I have to clean those pullies anyway!

Manual will tell ya' not to use auto parts, but it should qualify that by saying on "SOME" things. Alternator, starter, water pump, and things like that are marine specific. Spark plugs, belts, oil filters, and many general maintenance things are not so specific.

NAPA stores typically have OMC parts built into their parts catalog, so you can check with them many times. The local AutoZone by me also has some marine information, not as specific or as well organized but there none the less.

SouthK and Bondo,

Went to VIP they did get one belt right. The PS belt part was correct. The alternator belt was not.

The good news: both belts were actually in pretty good shape. I had a little trouble getting a wrench in the right spot to loosen the Alternator and the P/S pumps as they are both in hard to reach spots, and the p/s assembly bolt was either 15/32 (didnt have the wrench) or metric! I used a 13mm on it finally, still a pita.

I did clean all the pully surfaces they were kinda gunky, but only a little bit rusty.. PB Blaster knocked that stuff off quick.

For the record this boat uses NAPA 7450 belts for ps and NAPA7400 for the Alternator.

I'll be taking it out this weekend hoping that fixed the trick. Leaks is still another issue.. more water than I want in the bilge at the end of the day, have no idea where it's coming from, seems to appear quicker when going slow, trolling around, docked, than when motoring around with skiers and such..

Found an exposed fiberglass patch on the port side area near the engine.. going to be watching that closely..
