The day I Broke the rear axle on the trailer I noticed this drip while taking pictures of the broken axle.

It's not water because the boat never made to the ramp nor did it rain. I smeared it on my fingers and looked like engine oil. Later I also noticed the engine trim was leaking?

Engine oil is not milky after running it and is within the hatch marks. I haven't checked the gear oil cause thats the same color too. I'll do that in the AM.

Any tips or advise?

thanks!!!

Is that the stuff you use to winterize up north? If so...I don't do that here in South Florida.

Trim oil, or gear oil is not going to get to the exhaust manifolds and Y pipe, and that is where the "oil" is coming from.
You say it's not water, but there is no way in the world it will ever be completely dry of water, and it could be a little rusty from engine and manifold rust and picking up some oil residue from the exhaust.

Re: Leak from outdrive Exhaust tube.

I couldn't resist and went out to take a peak. The area beneath the exhaust tube has dead grass the size of my fist. All around the dead spot is nice and green.

Check the Engine oil still full. Checked trim tab level, Full. Drive trim is just below half.

Didn't check the gear lube yet but will in the AM since it's been a couple of months since I take her out.

I topped off the drive trim resorvior just before I parked it for trailer maintenance.

So now I think, it's the trim cylinders. I do I test this or fix this. Is it a repair kit or replace the entire cylinder?

Thanks!!!

There is also gas residue in the water in the exhaust. It will kill the grass.
Besides, where is the bellows or tube?

Don S,

The rubber exhaust tube is on the left side (transome) of the picture and not visible. The shift bellows are at top of pic. Who am I kidding, you know this stuff.

Bubba1235,

So dripping of hydraulic oil is the norm and okay?

So I guess I shouldn't worry about the fluid from the exhaust tube. So my attention will be on the hydraulic oil leaking out of the trim.

Well, my eyes looked at it but didn't really tell me anything

What gear lube are you using in the outdrive? Is what is dripping the same color? May want to drain the gear lube and do a pressure and vacuum check.

I'm using quicksilver gear lube, same color as the engine oil.

How do I do a pressure/vacuum check? What tools will I need?

(off to the search)...

Re: Leak from outdrive Exhaust tube.

Ayuh,..

Considering that's leaking from the Outdrive,...

My 1st Guess is,...
The Outdrive is Leaking....
Probably from the Shift Spool, or the Top seal on the vertical shaft, or even from around the waterpump....

So I should take the following steps?

1 - Check Gear oil level.
2 - Pressure/Vacuum check the drive.

Thanks for the link and help thus far.

Ok.. Here is a sample of the gear lube drained this morning (engine has not run in over a week).

I put in about 10 oz of oil afterwards. I had a hard time screwing in the filling fitting so I lost about 5 oz if not more by that.

How does the fluid look?

thanks!!

You need to fill it back up, 5 oz is too much to loose. When you put the gear lube in from the bottom, put in the vent plug, then install the lower plug.

PS: You need to have the outdrive drained in order to do a pressure and vacuum test. It can not be done with oil in it.

Thanks for the tips. I filled it up just as you said. Will watch the level the after each time out. I have to gather a pressure/vacuum test set to do the test mentioned.

Re: Leak from outdrive Exhaust tube.

Well...here is an update.

Today I was adjusting my shift cables due to hard shifts while on the water. Cables were way off and I also found a failed crimp at the cutoff switch.

While I was doing the adjustments I noticed oil around the shift link on the drive. Upon closer inspection, it looks like there is a rubber o-ring that is saturated with oil. I didn't look any further hoping you all can give me some tips on how to remedy this leak.

Is this something that I possible caused during the impeller change?

thanks.

Are you referring to the shift shaft bushing in the lower unit?

Re: Leak from outdrive Exhaust tube.

Go to the adults only at the top of the forum, there is a link with the testing of the outdrive, guy sells the whole thing ready to go to test.

Now to your problem, you already found it, and it's a common problem.

Shift shaft wears out the seal over time, and when you do a impeller, kit should come with that seal.

Re: Leak from outdrive Exhaust tube.

Did you ever do a pressure and vacuum check on the drive (after the gear lube was drained, you can't do it with lube in the drive)

The bushing could be leaking, but it wouldn't run uphill to run out the exhaust outlet.
