Leaking 50 HP Motor

Last summer I bought a pontoon and quickly decided it needed a bigger motor. Soon after, i bought a 1989 Force 50 HP from a liar in MN. The motor was said to have a new water pump and be completly ready to go....Not true at all. This thing leaks water bad. After i quickly realized that it leaked water I pulled the head and water jackets off of the motor. THe motor had been apart and when it was put back together, it definatly had the original gaskets put back on. Luckily that was late in the year so the pontoon was parked for winter. Now, in the anticipation of spring and warmer weather (-15 this AM) I am getting ready to completly tear down the motor and clean/replace and repair everything needed. I have a Clymer manual and should be receiving a Force TSM tomorrow. Is there anything with these motors i should take particular care or specifically look for when tearing it apart?

Thanks.

Also, when I was running the motor, it would not shut off unless I opened the choke and killed it that way. Any advice on that? Bad switch?

Re: Leaking 50 HP Motor

Not too familiar with the smaller Forces but if it's like the earlier Chryslers then there is not much to worry about---dirt simple.

Failure to stop running could be a bad switch, but if it is electronic ignition, The switch is either wired wrong OR the terminals on the engine are incorrect. Really need to know ignition type. I believe most of the Forces on that year were electronic but it is possible some were magneto ignition

Electronic ignition uses the white wire from the CD box to go through the engine cable to the "M" terminal on the switch. Blue wire attaches to the other "M" terminal on the switch and Blue is grounded at the engine terminal by jumping to black. When you turn off the switch, both "M" terminals are in continuity. This connects the white from the CD box to ground and stops spark. Without grounding it, the engine will run forever. Indeed, with all of the cable wires disconnected at the engine terminal. you can pull start the engine and it will start and continue to run.

If it were Magneto ignition, look for missing brown wires from the points to the blue and white wires. Turning the switch shorts the points together and stops spark. Engine will run forever if points are not shorted.
