Re: Leaking Boat?? Drilled Hole For Transducer 2012 bayliner 185

Just to do what is right Bayliner should take the boat back to the factory to replace the transom. They should separate the hull to see what else was put together incorrectly.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ . What they said. Once wood in a transom gets wet it's not going to dry. It takes only a very small hole to allow water in, but since we're talking about a gas (water vapor) that needs to escape in order for the wood to dry it's going to take a very large surface area exposure to allow that. Not gonna' happen with a piece of wood encapsulated in fiberglass.

Also, if PROPERLY constructed and maintained a wood transom will last a very long time. This isn't an issue caused by a wood transom, it's an issue caused by poor design/manufacturing.

Sorry to hear about your situation. . . Boat warranties are such a game. Often, they seem to be meaningless.

With the transom core saturated, the boat will be OK in the near term, but may develop rot prematurely. It looks like Bayliner may not be concerned with the lasting effects of a workmanship issue ???

Thanks guys, i'm going to email bayliner back again and see what they will do here. So far they insist that the wood in the transom is still OK, but like you I think that's BS. There's no way it's ever going to dry out. Most likely it'll just distribute through the entire back end over time.

I have read a few posts about this and the thoughts that this should never leave the factory like this and poor workmanship. Also the bad rap Bayliner has had for years and the materials and construction should be better... has anyone thought that this is just SOP for Bayliner and nothing has changed with them?

I my 2 cents for your continued discussions with Bayliner . . .

I see it as really 2 warranty issues . . . (1) The leak along the rubrail/platform that you showed in your pictures and video and (2) the apparent void in the fiberglass encapsulation of the transom/swim platform that allowed water to readily soak into the core material (plywood)

It seems like Bayliner is happy to fix the first problem and call it resolved. However, they are ignoring the second problem.

I wonder how freezing would effect the water soaked wood in the transom?

That one scare me the most

sans-titre.jpg

how can you have uncovered plywood, joined, in the transom area? I'm not sure yours is a lemon and wonder if all the others 2012-2013 are built the same way, simply running full blast on the bilge pump, until they sank at the dock because of a dead battery...

This really has me wondering what took place with this boat before you purchased it. I don't know anyone who sells a boat in the same year they bought it.

Ask them for a "life of the boat transom warranty" no matter how many owners if they think it is OK to have wet wood in a year old boat. My neighbor bought a new 24'er in '92 and loved it until '94 and sold it in '95 to buy a 22' McKee Craft.

Thanks guys, i'm going to email bayliner back again and see what they will do here. So far they insist that the wood in the transom is still OK, but like you I think that's BS. There's no way it's ever going to dry out. Most likely it'll just distribute through the entire back end over time.

Warranties change dramatically from the original purchaser to the 2nd owner. I'm still thinking somehow the boat took major damage and was sold.

My boat, from one of the worst years for Bayliner "quality", had some rot in the cockpit sole, but even after 25 years, there is no water in the transom. Something is rotten in Denmark.

Now you have me concerned as well. I have the 2012 bayliner 185 as well. I spent about 4 hours on the lake yesterday and was concerned by the amount of water that came out after removing my drain plug.

Freezing wet wood pushes the plywood apart. Then the deterioration really begins.

Re: Leaking Boat?? Drilled Hole For Transducer 2012 bayliner 185

I can tell you for sure, there was no damage to the boat before the original owner sold it. He was an old guy, bought the boat to travel to his cabin to which there were no roads. Then he developed some health issues and had to give it all up, sold the cabin and all. The boat if you could see it is obviously not touched. He would have had no way to tell it was leaking, nor would I if I hadn't drilled the hole in the exact spot in the transom where water was trapped. Bayliner recognizes that this is a manufacturing defect, they have seen all the pictures, and probably this thread. However they only agree to fix the leak, (boat is going to the shop on Monday), and insist the integrity of the hull is not and will not be affected by the wet wood in the transom. And insist that they have a lifetime limited warranty on the hull, by which I guess they mean if I'm out on the water and the boat sinks, then they'll fix it?!?!? lol if I can get it back from the bottom of the sea.

Anyway's yes, you should all check your Bayliner for leaks. I flowed water down over the gunwale strip with a garden hose for 10-15 minutes and water began to appear around the washers/nuts that hold the top half of the boat to the bottom (pictures above).... You should also get an EPRIB or PLB.

Perhaps if Bayliner fixed the wood issue people would be more reassured of they're supposed commitment to quality. I'll admit it's difficult to fix in my case, I live in Canada, far from the nearest Bayliner factory, but I am willing to let them take it for however long they want to fix it...but they won't.

Richard

Funny you should mention this.
I live in Canada and Starcraft agreed to send my new boat right back to the factory last fall for a complete repaint and repair of any defects that I found.
Maybe Bayliner would do the same?

Well if they are willing to sell their reputation for this transom issue then so be it!

It's pretty sad and poor business.

Ok, so I'm thinking that maybe I should use some tumeric powder ( I'm Indian sorry ), or water based paint paste around the leaking areas that you posted in your photos to check if this could be a common dilemma with this model... Give me a few days, I'll be home soon... Really enthusiastic to see if it is???
