Hey maties,
I have a 1984 rude Mod# E70TLCRD. I have a couple of ?'S

1. There is some gear oil seeping out of the lower unit, a friend of mine told me that those older motors always have a bit of seepage and I shouldn't be concerned. It is not milkly in color but it seems to me, if oil is getting out then water is getting in. Should I change the seals?

2. I have rotary steering which seems to be skipping or slipping when under pressure at high speed turn etc. Is there an adjustment that can be done? Everthing seems tight. Though after taking it out this past weekend I noticed the pivot point where the motor hinges on the transom, seems to be missing a bushing because I can move the pivit point up and down on the starboard side. Would this be the culpret?

Thank you in advance.

You shouldn't be getting any water in the gearcase. You can test by draining the oil, look for water and pressure test the gear case. No more than 15 psig and it should hold some pressure for at least 45 minutes. Same deal with a vacuum test. Pressure test with gearcase under water will show where any leaks are. You have three seals (prop shaft, shift shaft and drive shaft) plus the drain and fill screws.

I assume you have mecanical (not hydraulic) steering. Loose or missing bushing on hte motor should cause any slipping. There may be a problem with the helm unit. If it's a Teleflex piece, the have trouble shooting info on their website.

You should take the drain plug out and see if a little milky oil or water drips out. If not close it up and add a little gear oil at the vent plug. BTW, If the oil that drains out of the drain hole is black, it is worn out and should be replaced.

It is far more likely that you are seeing the unburned oil that is draining down from the combustion chambers, which is what is common, or typical, of two stroke outboards.

Re: leaking gear oil lower end

Whoops I forgot, I do have another question.
My pee hole had a fitting that broke off the end of the hose where the water came out. I didn't replace that fitting and just let the 1/8" rubber line hang out the cowling. My question is, will that harm anything without the fitting that broke? There is a larger stream of water coming out now which is warm to the touch while in operation. I was just thinking with the fitting installed it may create resistance so the water would pump through the motor with proper flow.

Thank you ezeke,
I think you nailed it. That oil is black, which makes since on the unburned oil. I will check anyway as you suggest.
