There is an artical in this mornings paper, about the number of hispanics moving into the area, and the fact that the (smal) city's hospital that used to get by with volunteers, and bi-linguel employees has now hired two full time interpreters. This small city has 1822 hispanics living here it states, that is one full time interpreter for every 911 hispanics, which at least half of them must speak some english (I wonder why it now cost $2000.00 PER DAY TO RENT A HOSPITAL ROOM).  The artical pictures one of the interpreters with a 57 year old gentleman from columbia, that his company recently transferred here from florida, and states that he has been in the U.S. for over 25 years, and does not speak a single word of english (the article was not a negative one, but a positive one).  I should think that having lived here for over 25 years the gentleman should have learned to speak english :D :D (is the officil language of florida still english   ).

Good Idea Nosleep. Just think of all the gas the Snowbird will save (seems Florida is 1/2 Candian anyway).

I work in the retail world and you wouldn't believe folks who come in and can hardly speak English. Actually took up sign language. Since its the only way sometimes to get them to understand what I'm trying to explain...But its all worth it cause its all American greenbacks once we understand each other...

Lakeman, I can't believe you would even axe that
Hello Ladyfish, what prompted that, I heard a fellow from miami say on a talk show the other day that he had to send his young'uns to private school, because they could not speak spanish. He said that is no lie, all they speak in the public school his would have to attend is spanish. I am not being predjudiced, as long as they are productive, and not a drag on our system allright, but I think they should learn the language, and not need special favors. :D :D

Yeah! I'm stuck here in Hell.. Florida that is... Right smack-dab in the middle of the "hispanic comunity"... Dang Q-balls... And the rest of the country wonders why Florida is such a mess... "Me no habla english" is a major reason why... <br /><br />My take on the english issue: SPEAK ENGLISH OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THE U.S.A..... Yes, I feel that strongly about it, and Yes, I'm prejudice and I don't care one bit who knows it either...<br /><br />I best quit before i get started..

The last time I was in Clearwater Beach, there was a vendor selling stuff near the beach.<br /><br />He had a sign that said <br />"I Don't speak Spanish. <br />If you can't speak English, <br />French, or Japanese, <br />Don't waste my time." <br /><br />Below that, the same message was written<br />in Spanish. ??

Hi folks,<br /> What you are talking about is becoming (is?) a national epidemic.I'am a native of the area I live and have seen dramatic change in my community.I'am not the type to be predjudice although I strongly feel our Hispanic population needs to learn the English language.Oh yes,I remember receiving those "Should English be the official language of the U.S." letters.<br />I think it's time they start learning our "native" language instead of us aquiring their's.If you are going to be living/working in the U.S. permanently, this should be mandatory.I also beleive their are too many favors/special attention given to our non-english speaking friends.Non english speaking folks can seem to get better (cheaper) health insurance coverage than myself. Be careful folks as our culture is changing and we may lose what we take for granted.Oh yea,If you like to speak Spanish don't forget to vote Democrat. ;)

Oh, it's a big problem... In the area we have so many nationalitys represented that you would not believe...<br /><br />Few weeks ago they had to send cops out to stop a fight between some neighbors... One Haitian, one Cuban, one Finlander (fin, p.c.?)(the witness).... None of these people spoke a word of english... How's the cop supposed to figure that one out? He could'nt!... Imagine if it was something more serious than a little fight...

Re: learn to speak english

Ladyfish, your from Texas and your surprised? I lived in Texas, the year I was in the 4th grade. Have relatives there. I know how Texans feel about the Alamo. When I heard that they were fixin to make it MANDATORY in Texas schools to make teachers teach about the Alamo from Santa Anta's prospective. Teaching that it was American Criminal's that stole the land from Mexico, and teach how Davy Crocket was lined up against the wall in the end and shot as a coward? It really does not make sense, what Davy and his men ride all that way to fight, have a chance to leave, then he turns coward in the end? Complete bull! They won't even hire you in some Police Departments in Texas if you don't speak spanish. WHAT IS NEXT? I am surpised that the Proud Texans that I remember are not trying to resurect Jim Bowie, Davy Crocket, William Barrett Travis, and Sam Houston (I know he wasn;t in the Alamo, but he dang well did a good clean up job) and start a whole new Rebellion against this so called "Revisionist History!<br /><br />Just one of GodsBeast's

Re: learn to speak english

This has nothing to do with prejudice from my perspective. I just get angry that no matter what the culture, kids (and some adults) can't seem to speak proper english. I know kids are being taught properly in school so what gives? When I went to school, if you continually spoke slang you were considered unitelligent or slow. Just a pet peeve of mine.
