Your feelings are entirely understandable. I feel the same way sometimes. Its really frustrating to have some stranger tell you how things are going to be when it comes to your child.

I think you are also right, in that the majority of parents do a pretty good job when it comes to these sorts of things, but not all do. There seems to be at this point, a couple of generations of parents that have no clue what-so-ever. Just today in my area, witnesses saw a woman dump something into the water from a plastic bag, at one of our parks. They investigated after she left and the "object" turned out to be a newborn child, who was dead. About a month ago, we had a case of a young father who slit his three year old son's throat because he didn't want to pay child support. I am still reeling from that one, because it was reported that when the guy picked his son up at the momma's house, the little boy cried out, "DADDY!" All I can think about is that image, followed by the bewildered look and sense of betrayal that this child felt, in the last seconds of his life.

Our laws in this regard are imperfect, but they are not without some reason for existing.

That's disheartening. This seems so commonplace today or does the media just do a better job of reporting? It seems these types of things didn't happen as frequently in decades past.

When elected, I promise to reinstate public stoning, flogging and hangings for such cases with express lines!

Let's not forget that the particular issue we're discussing here has absolutely nothing to do with the suitability of the parents. Even if every parent on Earth were perfect, you would still have children unwilling to admit wrong doing or embarrassing conditions in front of them. When those conditions can cause harm to the child, there needs to be a system in place to protect them. It's all about the child and parents should take comfort knowing the system works quite well at protected their best interest.

As a parent, I was engrossed in the options in this thread.
Than I read #21, which I can't even bring myself to quote.
I cannot begin to fathom what kind of animal could commit such a heinous act, in the name of saving a few hundred bucks a week. I wanna wretch.

It is indeed unfortunate that this piece of trash will cost his states' taxpayers several million dollars for his defense, as opposed to being dispatched in a slow and excruciatingly painful fashion.

I frankly am torn on this. I have forgotten this thread out there, but I am still in conflict on the issue.

Obviously I do not want to be in the room when she is being examined, but, out side of any illegal activity (which DR's need to be on the look out for) the condition and course of treatment is my business.

If she is pregnant, not by an kind of family rape, it IS my business. I don't give a crap what the law or the Dr's say. It is MY responsiblity to discuss choices with my daughter and to guide her according to the values we choose to follow.

I do this every day with smaller stuff, why am I not allowed with the doozies.

I understand all the "greater good" arguments, but I think this is a place where the law has overextended itself.

I trust my kids, my argument is not based on mistrust. It is based on the sanctity of my role as a parent and guiding force in her life.

BTW, the doctor handled it fine and thought I was going to blow a gasket. Which I wouldn't. I did not have to as she still needed a ride home. :)

Seems like it's another case of creating a rule for the exceptions. 99% of me doesn't agree with it, but if I was a female minor (and I'm a male pushing 40!) in a troublesome situation I would appreciate the heck out of the law.

But on to more serious stuff...did her obstruction clear?! :) Our young daughter used to have some constipation issues and we changed her diet and voila, she was healed. In particular, both she and I have dramatically cut back on wheat/gluten products and we've both seen "issues" disappear. A friend of ours used to get severe migraine headaches until he cut out 95% of the wheat/gluten from his diet and now the headaches are virtually gone. I'm not a hippie freak, but I'm a believer that looking to simple, diet-based "natural cures" can do us all a bit of good. We cram so much crap down our throats every day it's no wonder there's a gigantic system more than willing to take our money to "fix" us, and then we b*tch about how expensive it's getting. I can't wait until some political party finally proclaims it's time to build a system around preventing sh*t instead of fixing sh*t (and yes, this is only directed at sh*t that is self-induced...not that stuff that for some as-of-yet unknown reason just happens to us). Ok...back to reading BOAT posts...

This was an ongoing problem that was well known as to what to do about it. (staying away from cheese, taking the mirolax, etc) She just wasn't doing it and we knew it, even though we kept the pressure on her to do it.

She insisted we go to urgent care as she thought she was going to die. We took her on the off chance it had gotten bad enough to burst.

All I got to say its 100% wrong if Im suspected of these horendous acts on my daughter just because Im her Dad.........Thats right it seems like Im guilty before I have been proven guilty but hey this is America.....Why would I expect to have any rights parental or otherwise?.....If its got to be just like it is.......Then why on God's green earth can I not suspect the Doctor of being a perv and an abuser........I think I should be able to force a nurse to be in the room as well as the doctor.......Once Again nobody without a gun is gonna tell me that they are gonna be in a room alone with my daughter and for me to get out......Law or not........No offence I have known a few Docs I wouldnt allow in my home let alone give time to spend with my daughter.......How many doctors lose their lisenses every year for molesting patients and other crimes they commit againt their "Clients" I guess it can go both ways. I want a law stating that no Doctor can be alone with my children.......People are poele whether they are Docs or factory workers......I guess the law should cover us all......We all should be treated guilty until proven inocent....Including the Doctors........oh I have a feeling Im gonna have a hard time over the next 4 yrs feeling like Im able enjoty the freedom I was taught growing up that I had a "RIGHT" to :(

I don't know if it's still the way it was, but in times past, doctors wouldn't go in the exam room of a female without a nurse.

BTW, let's turn it around. If, when you were 14 or 15, you had severe pain whenever you "choked your chicken", would you want your Mom in the exam room when you talked to the doctor about it? I don't think so.

You have "rights", but so do kids. Sorry if yours get stepped on when there's a conflict in "rights".

Re: Learned something shocking about my kids healthcare

Law aside for a moment, there is, in my mind, a moral right to privacy in many matters, not just health, that begins at or near puberty.

That is long before parents surrender responsibility to support and supervise.

After puberty people are independent minded developing adults who make many decisions without regard to Mom and Dad. They make decisions to share information and feelings with peers, mentors, counselors and health care providers that they will not share with parents.

We need to respect the confidentiality of those relationships.

Well said JB,....as usual,

But dangit, we dads and moms are a loving and persistent bunch (while some are not!) and always will feel that we know and have the right to know more about our own flesh and blood/charges longer then we aught to! :D

Though I suppose that a couple of thousand years of doing it our way, doesn't mean we are correct.
Times and laws are a changing, and a lot of valid points are made here.

PH.

Re: Learned something shocking about my kids healthcare

For me it not about my kids rights.......Its about protecting them from possable harm........And truth is I was pretty open with my mom and my kids have learned to be with me as well..............If my 10 yr old son asked to speak with the Doc alone I would be 100% cool with it. But I aint down with anybody telling me how to raise my kids and it seems like each day we ( Parents) have less say over what our kids learn and do and how we HAVE to raise them whether or not we agree with it or not.

It just astounds me how many people are willing to give up their God given prerogative to the State. I guess that what is acceptable in the family will be acceptable in the Nations affairs.
